This three song EP is only available as a digital download, featuring the title track "Trial Of Champions" off 3 Inches Of Blood's release Fire Up The Blades, as well as two tracks that were recorded during the session for the same album that just didn't make the final cut. So, while you can find this EP for about the same price you would find it at your local media retailer that carries metal, is it really worth it?
Well, one perk is that, if you already own Fire Up The Blades, there is no real reason to download the title track "Trial Of Champions". If not, it's definitely worth a listen and will bring back some heavy NWOBHM nostalgia. The other two tracks, which have yet to be released outside this download, are nice additions for fans who can't wait for their next album. "In The Time Of Job When Mammon Was A Yippie" is actually a pretty good cover, a really has an old 80's hard rock sound that would probably sound better if you were stoned, especially during what seems like the drum solo with the guitars ringing over it. The song "Key To Oblivion" is definitely a hit or miss track, as it sounds more like it would have worked better for Advance And Vanquish. The song is nice, but the screaming on it just seems to be a bit too much at times and conflicts with the overall sound of the song, which isn't all that impressive to begin with, feeling a little restrained until it gets towards the end, but at least has a nice solo.
So if you are a fan and happen to have some money to blow, check out this EP. It's nothing all that spectacular, but it's a nice little something extra for fans of 3 Inches Of Blood.
