To help promote the release of Alestorm's second full length studio effort, Black Sails At Midnight, this mail order only EP turned retail, Leviathan, does a very good job at promoting both this and the previous band effort. Consisting of four songs, three of which weren't released, and a fourth that is extended for this release, it is a very well done, and simply addicting release that will make fans of this pirate metal band salivate with anticipation.
The title track, "Leviathan", has been extended from the version that appears on the full length Black Sails At Midnight release, having an added introduction of waves to represent the atmosphere of the song. This is a nice touch and adds a great bit of ambience to this monster of a track. The rest of the material on here has been released already in different ways. "Wolves Of The Sea" is a cover of a song that represented Latvia in a Eurovision Song Contest, and it's a nice addition to this line-up with a very catchy chorus. Then you have "Weiber Und Wein", which is simply their song "Wenches And Mead" from their debut album, but in German, and "Heavy Metal Pirates" was released as a CD single in 2008, as well as released prior to that while the band was still under the name Battleheart. This re-recording of the song is just a nice touch to the EP, but doesn't really represent the band now.
Leviathan is a nice collection of songs for an EP, and becomes an item not just for those who are OCD or have to collect every release from the band. This release is more of an extension to both albums that will make even the casual fans want to pick this release up. With one song that seems a little out of place, Leviathan will have you at the helms of metal again, throwing your fists in the air, and looking for a village to pillage, all at the same time.
