Focus Shift is the lead single release to promote the band's upcoming album Fiction. The single was a very limited release, sold only at shows, as well as Hot Topic retailers, and features two tracks on it: "Focus Shift" and "Terminus (Where Death Is Most Alive)". As soon as the single starts, it's clear the band has continued the sound they perfected on the album Character.

"Focus Shift" is an excellent track, catchy and dark from start to end, but a little more relaxed. The only problem is that this song sounds pretty much like "Lost To Apathy" off of the album Character. So, aside a lack of originality on the song, it's still a catchy track that youu will enjoy for a couple of spins. "Terminus (Where Death Is Most Alive)" is really the stand out track on here, also being a rather relaxed song relying on ambience set into motion from the keyboards and melodic fretwork of the guitars. This is the song that should have been the single in the first place. The production on the drum's cymbols though may be enough to annoy some people, as they seem to just sound as though they are going in and out instead of a natural ringing out until hit again sound.,

So, with a rehash of an already well loved single, and what could be a band or production screw up for "Terminus (Where Death Is Most Alive)", this isn't giving off a lot of good vibes for the full length. This single is a decent piece to add to the collection if you're a die hard Dark Tranquillity, but other then that there is no need as these songs are available on the full length Fiction anyway.
