Well, let's see...two tracks on the whole thing, the artsy title Suicide And The Rest Of Your Kind Will Follow that doesn't quite make much sense, and it carries the name Dodsferd? Yes, it is, and is definitely a bit of a departure from the normal sound of the band. This marks the fifth full length release by the solo Black Metal act, and finds the act trying to set a new foundation for itself by changing up the performance of the music to create a somewhat creepy, if not trance-inducing sound that, while repetative, is something a bit different from the typical hordes that make up this genre of music nowadays.
Like many ambitious Black Metal ventures, the production quality on this release is rather raw, keeping the guitars a little muffled with exception of the high pitch notes played that seem to nearly drown everything out but the drums. The riffs used on this release are fairly simple and bring the song to a much slower pace, but the old-school stoner-esque drum work is what really aids the album along, due to it's repetative, droning pace through both songs, and being the clearest of all things on the release and not really changing that much between the two songs. While this doesn't really help the album along, it really helps push the ambience of the first track, whereas "His Veins Colored The Room" is more guitar-oriented and introduces a little more complexity in the riffs that was missing on "Suicide And The Rest Of Your Kind Will Follow".
The only issue would be the vocals. The wailing style used really does go well against the grim and rather depressing atmosphere of the songs, especially with "His Veins Colored The Room", there's no denying that. The issue is that often, the vocals will be a bit too whiny, almost as if you were listening to some sort of Emo version of a "kvlt" Black Metal album that recorded by two kids in their mother's bathroom. The higher pitched howls utilized in "His Veins Colored The Room" definitely spruce up the track a bit and kind of make up for the cracking, failed Macabre vocal approach. Granted the recording is meant to be raw, but it would have helped this release out greatly had a little more attention been paid to the vocals so they could be better understood and not just sound like random wailing and whining.
This rather eclectic release isn't the worst album you'll ever buy, and it's a noble venture for the band, but there's nothing really all that impressive with it. The simple guitars and mindless repetative slow-paced drumming works well to hammer home the effort of putting the listener into a bit of a trance, but much of the trance is lost through the vocals and sheer length of the tracks. Honestly, had this release been just one long thirty minute track with the start of "His Veins Colored The Room", then it would have really been something rather interesting, as both tracks would mesh well together and almost come off as if you are just listening to the same song but in two parts for some screwed up reason. Suicide And The Rest Of Your Kind Will Follow is a nice experimental album, but there's still work that needs to be done before Dodsferd puts out a follow up to this release if they intend to make their next release another opus like this one.
