Review
While browsing the local music retailer's metal section, one disc's artwork simply stood out for the rest. The band was called Exmortus, a name that has never been uttered amongst friends and fellow fans. Upon inspecting the back of the artwork, a label name that also has never been mentioned peeked curiosity even further. The album, In Hatreds Flame, was release on a label called Heavy Artillery, using a big ass tank as it's mascot. This was a must buy, and one of the very few albums to ever make this reviewer just sit in awe with jaw dropped from the very first few opening riffs.
This album is simply amazing. There is no other way to describe it. The music is simply harsh and in your face, with it's fast paced guitar riffs, blistering blast beats and double bass kicks, and vocals that compliment it all with a clear, semi-gutteral sound presented with pure tenacity and some well placed overlapping vocals. But what really will leave you astounded with this release is the guitar work. The frets alone are insanity. "In Hatreds Flame", "Triumph By Fire" and "Onward To Battle" show off some very talented fretwork. But the real gem of this release is the simply breathtakingly insane guitar solos that Dragonforce would even be envious of, and will simply cause you to give up all hope of properly learning how to play a guitar.
In Hatreds Flame is simply relentless as you continue past the opening tracks. Much of the album is comprised of songs like mentioned above. However, "Valor And Might" seems to have more of a victorious, even folkish or viking feel to it. This "radio single" worthy track is catchy as hell, but feels slightly out of place because of how heavy and noticable the bass is compared to the other tracks on this release, which are predominantly ruled by the guitar riffs and solos.
In Hatreds Flame is, hands down, one of the best albums to come out of 2008. Any fan of metal would eat this album up and leave it on repeat for who knows how long. A must have for any fan of this style. It's just sad that it took so long to discover this phenomenal act. Exmortus is easily one band to keep an eye on, and their label, Heavy Artillery Records, is a label to watch if they continue to release albums like this, or from acts as promising as this one.
