Review
Sweet Blasphemies marks the debut release from the Death Metal band Horrendous, and what a debut it is. Oiginally released by the band as a five song CD-R, the demo is once again made available as a limited pressing professional cassette, and it's well worth the money if you do happen upon it thanks to the band's ability to create face ripping music that seemlessly finds itself blended with slower paced material that brings a very eerie atmosphere to the primal intensity already established right fromt he start.

Right from the start of the release, Horrendous tear into the listener with "The Mystic", which is essentially what you can expect throughout the entire recording. The music is fast and can simply be described as brutal right from the gate, with matching roughened gutteral vocals to level everything out nicely. This song really shows the band's musical ability well as it manages to slow down to a deep, ominous crawl to close out the song without it actually doing any damage to the pace already established in the song. This isn't the only time it appears, as you'll find something similar to this with "Putrid Rebirth". This song starts off right in your face with fast, somewhat technical Death Metal riffs that would make fans of plenty of well established acts of this style, scream with joy. Sadly, the song just feels a little short in the end and like there could have been more done to it, but for what it is, it's still a solid track that will get the listener's blood pumping the same way the rest of this demo does.

The only downfall that can be found on this release would be the ending to the track "Reanimated". To close out the song, hr music slows down to a crawl, but, unlike in "The Mystic", it's far more simpler. Obviously, given the lyrics at the end, it's to set off a feeling of all hope being lost, which it does, but the problem comes up with how long the band continues on with it. Luckily, it's not as long as the start of the song, but that even has more going on for it to keep it from being as repetitive. Had the ending of this song been cut off a bit instead of drawn out as long as it was, it honestly would have been the perfect ending to the song, but even this isn't all too frustrating a setback for the album since it's roughloy an addition five or ten seconds that go on a bit too long. Everything else about this track is great though. The music is intense, the vocals superb, and once again the guitar solo just amps up the conclusion of the song nicely.

Another thung worth pointing out about Sweet Blasphemies would be the final soing, "Disintegrating into Obscurity". This song really is set apart from the rest of the release, just in the sense that it's musically different to everything else. There are what siound like radar beeps in the background of the song just prior to the guitar solo, and they honestly can be a little irritating after a while since the solo itself is fantastic and creates a very astral atmosphere to accompany this more science fiction sounding song. The guitars present on this song in general also feel a little out of place, but mostly in the manner that they are more melodic then overall brutal, but they ultimately lend to the song and give it an edge that it doesn't fall into a blend of Death Metal meets Melodic Death Metal riffs, and keep the intensity alive well enough to close the demo off with the listener wanting more.

Simply put, Horrendous is a band you must keep an eye on. This band's brand of Death Metal is fast, intense, and carries a signature to distance themselves from all the other well established acts in the style for today's Death Metal scene. If you have yet to hear of Horrendous, then don't worry because soon you will be. Sweet Blasphemies is one demo that is a high priority release for anyone who calls themselves a fan of Death Metal.
