Tales Along This Road is perhaps the best Korpiklaani album to date. There really is nothing much you can say to prepare yourself for this release, especially if you have heard the band before. Right from the start of the feel good track "Happy Little Boozer", you know the fun is only just starting. While tracks like "Happy Little Boozer" and "Spring Dance" show off the more upbeat, fun loving style of folk metal the band is known for, there are some serious moments, such as the track "Tull Kokko", which is a much slower, somber song in comparison to the faster, violin and bagpipe assisted metal tracks. "Under The Sun" is perhaps the most stand out track off the release though, which is a slower track, but it's the faster paced chorus that will be stuck in your head, and sounds like it was a hard rock track turned into their brand of folk metal. Out of all of the songs on this release, the only real let down would be the track "Korpiklaani", which just has a filler feel to it and sounds as though it's just riffs used previously, but recycled. "Hide Your Riches" also falls into this category, but "Rise" and "Kirki" definitely make up for this track, though, as "Rise" has a feel much like the chorus of "Vakirauta", but done faster, and "Kirki" is just a really heavy song from start to end. The bonus track, "Free Like An Eagle" is a nice added touch to the album, and, like "Under The Sun", it stands out against the rest of the album, and is yet another instrumental. All in all, Tales Along This Road is a great album. Much of the music on here will have you feeling good about yourself, maybe even life, and pull you out of whatever slump you happen to be in. While the vocals may take some time to get adjusted to, you'll quickly see why Korpiklaani is becoming one of the most important names in the folk metal scene today. |
