Much like each Leaves' Eyes release schedule that has come before, My Destiny is an EP that Napalm Records put out at a cheaper price to help promote the release of the act's upcoming album, this time in support of the release Njord. Like usual, it features the lead single off the album, entitled "My Destiny", as well as another track off the album, and four other tracks not featured on the full length (two of which are completely new songs), making this an important release for die hard fans of the band itself, the vocalist, or just the casual fan who wouldn't mind hearing more by this band.
The single, "My Destiny" is a pretty catchy song that does deserve to be used to promote the album. However, the problem with this one is the male vocals, which kind of counter the music and Liv Kristine's beautiful vocals by adding a rather cliche auro to the music. This, and "Northbound" feature the two tracks taken from the album, and prepare the listener pretty well for what's to come. The real lure of this EP, especially for those who already have the full-length, are the very impressive non-album tracks "The Battle Of Maldon", which features a better male vocal performance then anything off the full length and comes off as something done so well that it obviously was just omitted from the album for either the release of this EP or due to time restraints, and "Nine Wave Maidens" which is very similar, at least vocally, like "Scarborough Fair", especially with the first two lines of the chorus sounding as if the band just ripped it off. While it sounds great, the similarities are just too obvious and may leave a bitter taste in your mouth.
The rest of the EP will wind up leaving you with mixed emotions. The acoustic version of the Simon and Garfunkle song "Scarborough Fair" is a beautiful rendition that shines above the version that appears on Njord and is well worth checking out. However, the remixed version of "My Destiny" is actually a huge let down. While the song actually has some epic moments to it thanks to the focus on keyboards instead of the actual music, but at the same time sounds a bit too techno for the type of song it is, as well as very toned down in comparison to the original. Even the male vocals on it sound worse, which is actually shocking given how generic they come off on this track.
So, with the exception of the "My Destiny (Remix)" track, and the evident similarities to "Scarborough Fair" in "Nine Wave Maidens", the EP does feature some great material, and some unreleased stuff the collector and rabid fan of this band will enjoy. As for the casual fans who want to hear the unreleased songs, it may be more cost efficient to just download all but the first and last track, but either way, aside the two aforementioned tracks, the material on this album is great and will really have you coming back for repeat listens.
