Review
Originally released in 2002 through Decomposed Records, Macabre show off their dark comedy side with Morbid Campfire Songs. This five song EP is composed of songs originally composed by Shel Silverstein, but, of course, slightly altered to create a more grim and/or comical acoustic release. Composed by only two members of Macabre (Corporate Death and Nefarious), this EP really does come off as if you are sitting around a campfire for a sing along. So, why not pull out some marshmallows and warm up your soft, singing voice as you read through this review!

Morbid Campfire Songs is a stellar album, especially if you happen to be a fan of Macabre in the first place. The first two tracks, if you heard the originals, are a bit comical, but not as funny after your first play through once you get over the initial shock of Macabre singing and that they actually sound great, especially when both Corporate Death and Nefarious sing against each other. The same goes for "In The Mountains", but that one is just catchier the way it's performed then the first two.

While the first three tracks are great, the real important tracks off this one are saved for the end. "The Cat Came Back" just keeps building and building right from the start, and each instance just get's far more ludicrous and hysterical each verse, and will be an instant winner in the hearts of everyone since, let's face it, who never heard the original song at some point in their life? And then you have "Found A Peanut" which, while very repetative as far as the lyrics are, it's actually very well written if you get the point of it at the very end. There's no real chorus to the song, it's just performed in verses that repeat the same thing in each verse with one line being sung differently. It may sound boring but it goes at a rather faster pace, and when the guitars drop in tone mid-song, the hilarity of the situation will hit you, and the ending is absolutely priceless and shows off exactly what's been going on from the start.

There's a lot to be said about Morbid Campfire Songs by Macabre, but the best thing to say about it is that it's a wonderfully captive take on ruining your childhood memories. Full of dark folk-like acoustic songs and hysterics, the EP will see plenty of spins in your player from start to finish. The problem is, however, that much of the comedy winds up growing old after a while, and the only two tracks that will hold their luster are the last two, "The Cat Came Back" and "Found A Peanut", because, let's face it, how many more people must die before that cat does, and "Found A Peanut" just never really ends. Originally sold as a single release, this EP has been bundled with the bands Murder Metal album, so if you haven't picked either up, now is the perfect time to update your childhood memories...
