Review
The Complex Bewitchment by allegedly ambient Norwegian black metallers Mactatus is something that is hard to describe. While the album has some interesting moments, as well as positive moments, it is ultimately a rather boring release.
With that being said, let's look at some of the positive aspects. Some of the ambience in this album, mostly by keyboards, actually sounds pretty good against the music. The song "Iron Handed" just sounds great and is definitely a stand out track worth checking out. However, much of the album is rather bland, faltering from some rather bland guitar riffs, and non-ambient keyboards on some of the songs.
The drumming on this release is superb though. "Complexity In Vain" is a good example, as the drummer can jump from blast beats to the normal drumming speed of the song perfectly, and the vocalist sounds really good as well. The only problem would be that the vocals don't quite have the same intensity as on previous records, but instead sound more like he is trying to expand on the vocal stylings found on albums by Immortal.
But, as stated before, while the album isn't bad, it's just kind of boring. And by boring, that element would be that the music isn't all that impressive. Much of the album is what you would expect from a black metal band, and kind of sounds like stuff you would have heard in the past. That or, like "Dance Of Might", the track may just try to sound "epic" but ultimately just sound "cheesy".
There are enough good songs on this release worth checking out, like "Ornament Of Pettiness", "Iron Handed" and "Complexity In vain", but the rest of the songs just really aren't worth it. The Complex Bewitchment is definitely worth a listen for those songs, but if you don't feel like shelling the money for the release, then just buy the three songs mentioned above and hope for better things on the next release.
