Review
Just by looking at the artwork it is clear what we are in for here. US based band Malignancy have released their debut album, Intrauterine Cannibalism, onto the masses. The band blends grindcore with some rather technical death metal, which helps to distinguish them from the hordes of "grindgore" bands that have come along since the days of Carcass. It's clear that the band has a fixation with pregnancy, as well as human internal organs, and what happens to them in just about every death metal album.
But don't let the above statement get you down! This is one hell of a release. Malignancy's music on this release is absolutely insane from start to finish. Just about every track on this album has blisteringly fast and very technical, with the occassional grindcore-esque breakdown. such as on "Profitable Extinction". Much of the music also seems sporadic, being insanely fast one minute, then switching to a small bridge that could just be two or three of the same chords played two, maybe three times in a row before either returning to the madness, or heading into one of the aforementioned breakdowns.
There also seems to be a little bit of a groove aspect in the music. Take some of the riffs in "Ignorance Is Bliss" for instance, About one minute into the song, you can hear what seems to be a groove based guitar riff. You can also hear some groove riffs throughout the album, which include the songs "Rotten Seed", "Oral Excrement, and "Your Life Is Shit". However, there are the typical "pig squeels" on this release, which can either be obvious, or, such as on "Your Life Is Shit", not as high pitched and blend in. This doesn't deter anything from the sound of this release unless you are absolutely sick to death of hearing them since they are not used on every track like many other bands out there.
Another thing to point out with be the drumming on this release. While the music may be sporadic and heavily noticable with the guitars, the drumming is phenominal. One second you have a rather slow death metal drum beat going on, the next it sounds like the drummer is having one hell of a seizure, blasting away, and then be able to just stop and go back to that exact slower death metal beat. This is perhaps the most impressive of all on the album.
So, if you are looking for something that will just make you clench your hands until the knuckles are white, and let it be a good thing, Intauterine Cannibalism is definitely a safe bet. With it's blistering guitars and drums, and technical aspects, the only thing that is even remotely a let down would be the vocals, which are great but nothing all too special. "Intestinal Sodomy", "Oral Excrement" and "Waterlogged Corpse", among many others, will have this CD a solid fixture in your CD player for a great deal of time, making this one of the most underrated bands of this style.
