Review
Plague Angel is really where the band Marduk began to shine through the use of killer blast beats and really nice guitar work. Unlike most Black Metal bands that have started to dabble in this, the drumming wasn't the main priority, and there was a lot of emphasis that was put on the guitar riffs used in this release to offer some form of structure, that, for a good majority of the time, seems to just never end.

The guitars on this record are simply sick, and work perfectly with the fast paced drumming, but this release isn't all blast beats and seizures. There are some slower songs on this release that are nicely constructed and give up a hint of ambience towards the music. Take "Seven Angels, Seven Trumpets" for example. While this isn't the strongest track on the album, the slower paced track does wind up having some powerful guitar chords attached to it that save the song from mediocrity. Among all the songs on here, the track "Deathmarch" stands out due to it being a nicely done, dark, industrial-sounding march of death track with vocals that kick in that provide nothing more than ambience really. At the same time, this one could be skipped since it really isn't too key to the album in the first place.

While Plague Angel is a great album, there really is only one drawback. Since a good majority of the album is so fast and utilizes blast beats so much, there are moments in just about every song, around the time "Steel Inferno" kicks in, that you will sit there hearing some drum patterns that you already heard earlier on in the album. The good thing to note is that the guitar riffs are usual rather distant in sounding like one another, offering a nice hint of originality between the songs if you can look past some of the similar blast beats. You also have the slower tracks on here that, while a decent listen, aren't really anything special. "Seven Angels, Seven Trumpets" is a decent song, yes, but "Prish In Flames" just feels extremely drawn out and just becomes boring very early on.

Plague Angel is a definitely a superb album worth picking up. This blast beat heavy album offers some great guitar technicality that keeps up with insane blast beats from the drummer. Even though the drums may sound repetative after a while here and there, and the slower tracks aren't really anything to go crazy over, the band still manages to keep each song rather fresh and present a furious onslaught of Black Metal that will keep you coming back for more for a good while.
