Review
What if someone were to come up to you and say the Megadeth you hear today has come to an end? What if someone told you that this band has gone back to their thrash roots? Surely, the response would be extreme joy and a tightening of the pants for the male metal fan demographic. Well, what if you were to find out that those two statements were not simply rumors, but the truth? It's true, Megadeth has gone back to their thrash roots on Endgame, and it is definitely an overdue sigh of relief from the fans who didn't quit find the band's recent heavy metal offerings to be as heavy as their older sound. It all starts with the impressive instrumental track "Dialectic Chaos", which bleeds into the insane "This Day We Fight!" which will make any metal fan's blood start pumping hard and make you want to...well...fight! After that, the songs on the release fall into either of two categories: Melt your face off and make you want blood to shed, or crushingly heavy sounding riffs in a somewhat slower pace. "Bodies" is the lightest song on this release, but it's still a good track, even though the song isn't as crushing as songs like "Bite The Hand". Another nice touch that appears on the album are some well fitting spoke word audio cuts that appear over the start of some of the songs, as well as later on during the same song. But, the nicest part of this album would be added keyboards during the song "The Hardest Part Of Letting Go...". Yes, there are keyboards utilized during this song, and not to create a melodic death kind of ambience. They work well along with the music on this track, and seriously just add to the intensity of the track. There's even an acoustic moment in here near the end, and even though it kind of comes out of nowhere, it is the outro to the song, so it doesn't really break up the flow of the song, but nor does it really enhance it either, it's simply there to change things up a bit with the song. But, not even a second after that finishes, "Head Crusher" jumps in and starts wailing on your face with it's fast paced guitar riffs that greeted you at the start of the album with "This Day We Fight!", and the very heavy closing track "The Right To Go Insane". What else is there to really say about Endgame? This Megadeth album is a very sweet surprise for those who didn't like the recent musical direction the band was heading, and everyone who wanted them to go back to their roots to create one hell of an ass kicking album. Endgame is a non-stop, heavy as hell, thrash roller coaster that will punch you in the gut repeatedly and leave you begging for more then just one ride. It's clearly one of the best Megadeth albums to come out in years, and is also one of the better releases that 2009 has to offer. If you haven't picked this one up yet, what's wrong with you? This is a CD you'll keep on you at all times, and won't easily get sick of.
