Review

Neldöreth (not to be confused with inactive Italian Black Metal act Neldoreth) are an unsigned Black Metal act from Northeast Pennsylvania that originally formed in 2004. The band originally started out as a straight forward raw Black Metal act and wound up going inactive for a while, but has returned as a more old-school Death Metal project. This sampler was sent out to various radio stations and magazines/web-zines for review, as well as to promote the release of the band's upcoming full length album Invert Christ. Given the band's previous releases and live performances, this incarnation's effort all around is the best yet.

The EP features two cover tracks that will appear on the full length, and both of them are pretty good. The cover of Death's "Evil Dead" is pretty good and very catchy, doing the original great justice. The cover of Venom's "In Leage With Satan" is pretty good as well, but due to the raw recording quality and the way the vocals are, it sounds as if Neldöreth is a band with a Southern tinge to their music. That's not to say this version is bad, as there are horrible covers of this track out there, and nothing can compare to the original of this, as well as "Evil Dead", but just worth pointing out that it may give off a feeling of a heavily distorted version, at least vocally, of Motorhead covering this track.

But the real thing to look at here would be the original track "Invert Christ", which is actually really good. The track even features your traditional horror movie clip to kick it off, but at least it works with the song. The song follows a rather simple structure, but the music is well done, and much of the track, especially the chorus, will be stuck in your head for days. While some deeper gutteral vocals would have done the song well, the distortion used here on the vocals actually work well with the song, giving it more of an impact that fans of Behemoth's Demigod album will lovingly embrace.

Invert Christ is looking to be a very promising release for this band, as well as this line up. Given the previous releases, this new Death Metal style seems to work best for them and their abilities. If the rest of the album is anything like the title track on this release, then Neldöreth will definitely have a formidable Death Metal album on their hands, and show that they are a band to keep your eyes on.
