The German Heavy Metal act Sinner isn't a new band, but they never really obtained that much recognition since their debut materials in the early 80's. Doing some research, it seems that much of the band's more recent releases haven't really been widely accepted. This actually came to be a bit of a surprise since Crash And Burn is actually a very nice throwback to the old-school sound of both Rock and Metal. The material here varies from either rather serious Heavy metal that falls somewhere between the vibe of Edguy mating with Hammerfall with some pretty impressive and well-fitting guitar solos, or a more fun hard rock element that would fall moreso in the Traditional Metal and Hard Rock aspect way of life. Either way, both of the elements merge very well on this release from track to track and create roughly half an album's worth of catchy, casual bliss.
Why just half an album? Because the real magic happens during the first half of the album. The title track, "Crash And Burn" is easily the hardest hitting song on here, but "Heart Of Darkness" cannot be overlooked as a one of the more serious, heavier tracks on here. "The Dog" is a very catchy Hard Rock-oriented track that will probably be lodged in your skull for days. These tracks show great promise for the album and have a high chance of being stuck in your brain for days. Even "Fist To Face", which goes past the first half, is a really good song that relies mostly on speed then anything else. Yes, the album is great, up until "Revolution", where everything starts to go downhill.
"Revolution" and "Unbreakable" come off really cliche and can become rather boring after your first listen, or even during, and mark where the album starts to lose it's flare, with the exception of the closing track "Like A Rock", and the love it or hate it not-quite-a-ballad-ballad track "Until It Hurts". The worst part of this cluster of tracks, however, has to be "Connection", which sounds like a direct rip-off of "The Boys Are Back In Town" by Kiss from start to finish. While the songs on this part aren't all that great, the vocals are as well done as they are at the start of the release, and the guitar solos kick just as hard as well.
Crash And Burn has plenty of tracks that will hold the attention of anyone looking for a breath of fresh air in the Metal world, or who just happens to like a Hard Rock album once in a while. The first half of the album shows the potential Sinner has to really come out and rock you hard. But, at the same time you have a number of bland tracks that you'll probably think you already heard, or, in the case of "Connection", already have way before this one. If you're not willing to throw a few hours of hard work into the fan on this one, then at least give the first half, as well as "Fist To Face", a chance through your local MP3 on-line retailer, and see that, if the band concentrates on putting together some more original-sounding material, their next album can really hit it home.
