Review
Unholy Grave has released an insane amount of material, if you couldn't tell by the above discography (which, by the way, took more time to put into this review then this actual release was from start to finish). This year alone [at the time of this review] the band has issued four live releases within the time span of three full months, the fourth being issued on the first date of April. In this time span, it's hard to believe that Grind Killers is going to be a quality product from this band, so don't try to believe it. Grind Killers is actually a pretty awful release, but perhaps a respectable one. The material on Grind Killers is not too bad for the most part. There are plenty of tracks on here that actually have some entertaining material on it, and material that will grow on you after your first go through the release. "Pay The Price?" is one of those example tracks of the material on here that will need to grow on you. For some reason, the vocalist does this weird as clean-spoken-gibberish thing from the back of his throat, clearly saying things in Japanese. Since the band is from Japan, the language isn't really shocking, but the fact that it's spoken like that on this track, as well as plenty of other tracks on here, makes no sense since it sounds so lame and only makes you want to break out into laughter, especially during the track "Free From Fear". Sadly, they also appear during the cover of the Ramones classic "Beat On the Brat", if not worse and more tone deaf then on any other song here. The production quality on the release is pretty raw and, as far as the vocals go, is pretty awful. The overall production comes at a very low volume and rather raw. While this isn't the main downpoint to the recording, the vocals are simply horrible. The vocals sound as muffled, if not worse, then the instruments, and the spoken nonsensical moments sound much lower then practically anything else recorded. Another issue that rises would be the factor of repetition. While there are plenty of tracks on here that offer variances in the sound, especially considering how many tracks and release compose Unholy Grave's back catalogue, there are still songs on Grind Killers that sound similar to one another, and you'll find them all throughout the release. Grind Killers really isn't that great a release, but still features some good Grindcore. The tone deaf singing on this release is enough to kill any drive to continue through it, as does the low production quality, but there are songs here and there that make the listener continue on towards the end. Tracks like "Pay The Price?" and the rather intense "No Racial Superiority" hit hard enough to prove that Unholy Graves has a good enough bite in them to make this release one that fans of Grindcore, as well as Unholy Grave should at least sample. However, for the casual fans of this style of music, this is one you could just pass up. Besides, it's not like this is the only live recording available from this band. |
