Interview with Fyrnd of Fyrnask

Thank you very much for taking the time to talk to me about the album. First of all, how did the concept of Fyrnask come about?
Fyrnd:
It was just the drive to make the music that I want in conceptual context. It was clear that Fyrnask should be something deeply rooted in europe, concerning the concepts and topics the music is dealing with, and to develop the typical european sound in a certain way.
--
Why did you decide to tackle Fyrnask as a one man project, and not as a full band?
Fyrnd:
In first line it had to do with the lack of musicians, but it was surely also important for me, to let Fyrnask be, what I want it to be. I have certainly no problem, to play with other musicians, as I played and play also in other bands, but this was something important to me, and I want to share Fyrnask mainly with persons, who are into similiar aesthetic concepts like me.

Your first release was "Fjorvar ok Benjar" back in late 2010. I see sites calling it a demo, as well as that it was issued through Temple of Torturous. this a demo or a full-length, and how did it end up finding a home with Temple of Torturous?
Fyrnd:
It was not issued by Temple of torturous. It was distributed through Düsterwald Productions. The demo, as I want to call it nothing but a demo, due to its creation process, was "full-length" in terms of playtime. Temple of Torturous was a recommendation of a good friend of mine, and it was a splendid one, I think.
--
Sorry about that with the labels, it was a typo on my part. So, what was the reception towards this release like, and did it or any of the feedback towards it help to compose the music to Bluostar?
Fyrnd:
The demo was first never meant to be released and just an approach to classic black metal, mixed with some atmosphere. The release was important to figure out what things can sound like. After Düsterwald decided to distribute the demo, the first broader reactions came. The feedback was mainly good, but of course, there were also people who weren't into the sound at all. I would also say, the demo is far away from being perfect but it is also not the worst, there is.

Surely some of the feedback, if it is good written, in terms of reviews for example, help to think about things. "Bluostar" is an important album for me personally, because of the concept, but I would say, it also just a step towards a special sound, I am aiming for.
--
From what I see, the time between Fjorvar ok Benjar and Bluostar is just under a year apart. How long did it take you to compose the material for Bluostar, and why did you issue the album so quickly?
Fyrnd:
It just came naturally. Retrospective more time had developed this or that better. But this was also a learning process for me and I wanted no bigger experiments so far. I felt like "Bluostar" had to be written, as initial point for the next steps in a way. It was important to me, to compose something in a traditional way, and to mix it with a certain atmosphere.
--
What was it like working on this album by yourself? Does it allow the creative process to move quicker, or allow for more creativity? Please explain.
Fyrnd:
I think it allows the artist, to write the music he wants, without compromises. This is sometimes helpful, for example in case of the coherence of the music and the concept. Sometimes it can be also helpful, to have another person's opinion on things. It depends I guess.
--
Have you put any thought into live shows with Fyrnask? Why or why not?
Fyrnd:
Yes, there are plans to do something like live shows. It should become something special, so this is maybe also something we will work on for a while now.
--
What would you say are some of the biggest influences to Fyrnask, and would you say they can be found through Bluostar?
Fyrnd:
I think "Fauna - The Hunt" was important for "Bluostar", but also Ambient stuff, like "Sacrificial Totem" or "Atrium Carceri". The amount of music that could have influenced "Bluostar" is quite big and hard for me to survey.
--
How is Temple of Torturous treating you?
Fyrnd:
They treat us very well. Fu is a great personality, who is sharing the visions I have with Fyrnask. It was the absolute right decision, to release "Bluostar" via ToT.
--
Have you or the label ever discussed doing a music video of some kind for Bluostar?
Fyrnd:
This would be possible, but it would depend strongly on the aesthetics of such a video. I think, there are actually very few music videos I really like, when it comes to dark atmosphere and so on. Stuff like for example "Szamar Madar" from Venetian Snares is good, but would never fit to the concept of Fyrnask.
--
Speaking of visuals, what does the artwork represent? Does the hair growing out of the person's eyes mean anything in particular to reality, the music, or anything else? Please explain.
Fyrnd:
It has to do with the concept of "Bluostar". It is abstract, as the concept tends to be abstract, so it is not nescessarily hair, but an not defined structure. I can see, that it looks like hair, but it is also something to think about. That was also the goal, with the artwork: The people should find own interpretations and meanings, behind the symbolism of this album.

But to explain it a bit more particularly: "Bluostar" is old high german and means "Sacrifice" or "Offering". It deals, on a superficial level, with two abstract entities. On the one hand, there are attributes such as desire, strength, the concept of the avenger in a sense, while on the other hand, a physical aspect, the hunted, the letting go of desires and of connectedness to the world stands as an idea.

And this loss, also in a metaphysical way, is visualized also on the cover. It has to do with "offering".

Given the time between Fjorvar ok Benjar and Bluostar, is it safe to assume Fyrnask is already working on new material for a new album? If so, can you give the readers an idea of what they might be able to expect on it, or what kind of release it will be?
Fyrnd:
Yes, we're working on something new. It will hopefully be honest, sincere and it will be surely more extensive and experimental. If this works and what it gets, is a thing only time can tell, I guess.
--
So, what is next for Fyrnask? Are there any specific plans in place for the near or distant future?
Fyrnd:
There are some Ideas for Split-EPs and some other stuff, too. We'll see what comes next.
--
Well thank you again, Fyrnd, I greatly appreciately the time. I hope all goes well with the album and the band.
Fyrnd:
Thank you for the support and good luck with your zine.
