Interview with Marshall 'Fucking' Beckof Reign of Vengeance

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer a few questions. How's everything been going for you? Hectic with the release of the new album?
Marshall:
Not a problem... Yes, we have been very busy with gearing up for live shows and also recording new material. We are also in the process of recruiting a permanent drummer to sit in our thrown of brutality. We're sick to fucking death of having to scout for someone capable every time we want to do shows/tours.
--
Well, Disemboweling Swine is out. What has the reaction been towards the album, both from fans and the critics?
Marshall:
We don't pay attention to that shit. We write, perform the music, and are satisfied with it for ourselves. Those maggots all rip us off and download the album for free anyway.
--
Are you pleased with the final product for Disemboweling Swine?
Marshall:
Yes, the band is satisfied... for now.
--
When you went into it [writing the album], did the band intend to have those news samples at the very end and have it so the album seemed to be tied together in a more conceptual manner, or was it more of an after thought in the studio?
Marshall:
It was more of an afterthought. With REIGN OF VENGEANCE being THE horror movie death metal band I figured it would give the album a more cinematic feel to coincide with our label Brain Damage Films/Music. Metal Sanaz and Larry Mac executed their parts perfectly and helped us accomplish the intended goal. We would thank them for that but unfortunately, Brutality thanks nobody.
--
It was clear there were a good deal of influences brought into the album. What were some of the bigger musical influences that impacted the music of the album?
Marshall:
Some of the influences came from the other bands of the members that recorded this album. Other than that we were more inspired by violent films, alcohol, a forensics class I had taken, a ridiculous amount of marijuana, and occasionally crashing my Dr. friends autopsies at the local college. We do our best not to be inspired by other musicians because that's when all of the bands start sounding the same and the music becomes pointless.
--
Are these inspirations the reason for the strong b-movie film type of sound, as well as the more criminal oriented lyrical topics and themes? Please explain.
Marshall:
Ha! Criminal oriented...? Yes, our influences would be the reason for the b-movie film type of sound.
--
Well, are you or any of the bands into following true crime events or reading books based on them? If so, what ones as of late?
Marshall:
I'm not sure about the other guys but I personally don't care much for the true crime events. I took a forensics class in college and from that learned how to make the lyrics medically accurate. I do read a lot of violent and horror oriented books and watch a lot of horror movies. Its a genre that is often done horribly though so finding the authors, writers, and directors that do it right is difficult.
--
Have those events or stories impacted the lyrics to any Reign of Vengeance songs? If yes, how so?
Marshall:
Tommy is a fan of the WWE. The song "Unwanted Intruders" is based around something that happened a few years back with one their superstars. Other than that the lyrics are more or less stories that were conjured from my own dark, warped, and brooding head. I write about things I've experienced and know about. I then put a violent and bloody twist into them.
--
How was it that Reign of Vengeance joined Brain Damage Films, but through a branch for music?
Marshall:
I met Darrin when I was working a part time job that I hated to finance the album.... There is a song inspired by this job in the "Disemboweling Swine" album titled "He Hates His Fucking Job, He Hates his Fucking Wife, He Hates His Fucking Life."....... I commented that I liked his shirt and Brain Damage Films movies and he then informed me that he was the companies owner. We got to talking about music, met for a few beers, and then decided that REIGN OF VENGEANCE and Brain Damage Films would do best forming a strategic alliance. Based upon how popular Brain Damage Films made many of the bands from their "Traces of Death" soundtrack the band knew that Brain Damage Films would be able to assist the band in completing many of its goals.
--
Are you satisfied with being on that label/production company, or do you think being one of the first musical acts to it, they seem to not quite know how to handle bands as opposed to movies?
Marshall:
We are very satisfied with Brain Damage Films/Music currently. They listen to us, we listen to them.
--
Will we be hearing any Reign of Vengeance music on anything they put out, or perhaps a music video or DVD based around the lyrics of Disemboweling Swine?
Marshall:
Those are all concepts that we have considered. We will see what happens with all of that.
--
With the artwork and lyrics of the title track to the album, I have to ask this: Do you guys actually hate cops? Or, is it just for the lyrics of the song that fit the lyrical formula of the album?
Marshall:
I personally have a strong disliking for Sheriff Joe Arpaio and look forward to celebrating his death. A main problem we are having with this album is from the local Arizona media who has been too afraid to print/air the interviews or the album's cover artwork because of their fear of a backlash from Arpaio himself. I stand by what I've said and that we did not make the cover artwork to be "controversial"-it is meant to be a call to action. Joe Arpaio is a sadist who enjoys torturing his inmates and the rest of the Arizona community. He punishes severely and tortures Arizona citizens for offenses against even the most meaningless and commonly broken laws. Joe Arpaio needs to be removed from office and I don't understand how America has tolerated him for so long. He is the worst and cruelest example of what someone holding power in America can get away with. If this was the 1800's he would have already been dragged out of his office and lynched by the angry mobs for the crimes he has committed while using the protection of the badge. Unfortunately though, common Americans are fucking cowards nowadays and will tolerate just about anything.
--
Well, on that note, I'd like to say it's been a pleasure, and again I thank you for your time. I hope all goes well for you, the band, and the album. Take care! And incase he's internet savvy and finds what you had to say, watch your back for Mr. Arpaio!
