Compared to acts such as Dream Theatre and Between The Buried And Me, the band A Hero A Fake have released their latest offering entitled Let Oceans Lie. While the music here is a bit more mainstream oriented then either of those bands, the release does have some positive aspects to it that people looking for a casual album to just sit back and listen to will enjoy. Sadly, that’s where the line is drawn on this one.

Let’s get one thing straight first off, Let Oceans Lie is not a bad album at all. Much of the music on here is catchy and actually a bit relaxing, almost as if this is a mainstream act that kept a certain edge to still kick a little ass. For example, you have the more upbeat, lighter tracks “Our Summit, This World” and “Swallowed By The Sea” kicking off the album, both utilizing singing vocals that sound very stereotypical to modern day Rock and Alternative acts. But at the same time the rough/shouting vocals on these and other tracks are very rough and add a nice bite to the music. However, “Elk River Falls” does use singing as well, but is a very heavy track that has a rather good breakdown and just builds up intensity from there, showing that the band does have the potential to push it over the edge a bit, even if the introduction does sound a bit too similar to Demon Hunter‘s singing structure on their Triptych album.

It isn’t until the track “Sleepstate” that you will start to grasp that the band does bring in a slight Progressive element to their music with the technical guitar riffs, as well as the intensity this and other songs have that seem to flow naturally into that more leisurely sound that kicked off the album, but this doesn’t really mean the rest of the album is going to be as good. The music winds up changing so much throughout the release, between really heavy tracks like “Elk River Falls” and “Sleepstate”, but mostly comprised of laid back Hardcore songs with some nice guitar work to add a hint of intensity. That is, until the rather commercial punk/emo sounding acoustic track “Images”. While it sticks with the leisurely aspect of the Hardcore sound on the album, the song itself is weak lyrically, and clashes horribly with the flow of the album. After that, the material becomes hit or miss, as well as memorable or generic. It is worth mentioning that the final track, “A Year In Passing” may very well be nearly 15 minutes in length thanks to a bonus hidden track at the end, but it sounds like the music that kicks in after about five minutes of low nature sounds is still part of the songs that played prior to the noise. This second part or song is also not really worth the wait.

A Hero A Fake have the potential to be something spectacular, and they really do emphasize the constructs of the Progressive music style. While still captivating the heaviness of the Hardcore sound, the material is a bit more relaxing then most acts and gives a nice little hint of uniqueness. The problem is that many of the material sounds repetative and generic, with the exception of a few tracks here and there through the album that really stick out and will remain lodged in your skull thanks to the great guitar work and how tight the music is and the fluid-like flow the album has, not to mention some breakdowns that actually work with the music and don’t interrupt the natural progression of the track. Let Oceans Lie is far from being a bad CD, it has plenty of enjoyable tracks that will have you coming back for repeat listens, but it’s definitely something you may want to check out and decide whether this product is really worth it as a whole.
