The Asheville, North Carolina based trio All Hell is a new band to come out of the underground woodwork. While the project came together in 2013, it didn’t take long for the old-school Black/Punk/Thrash Metal act to get picked up by Horror Pain Gore Death Productions for their debut full-length album, The Devil’s Work. With an attitude that is a blast from the past, does this outfit that is barely even two years old present anything worth getting worked up for, or is it something a lot less desirable?

Like many bands in the Thrash Revival movement, All Hell present a rougher analog sound to their music, on par with early Toxic Holocaust recordings, as well as with the same amount of Black Metal dabbling. “Suffer for Me” introduces some truly infectious Thrash Metal material with simpler chugs and blackened grooves throughout to carry a little more aggression than the raspy vocals manage to muster. “Dead of Night” has a much heavier Groove Metal focus to it all around, weaving a ritualistic sensation through the dark, smoky sounding performance that isn’t afraid to carry some epic Heavy Metal subtleties as well.

“Child of God” introduces a Stoner Metal style that works perfectly with the early Black Metal undertones in the group’s music, leading to some truly catchy material on top of some of the most enthusiastic vocals on the entire release. “The Howling Hell”, however, trudges along in a Doom Metal fashion that hammers itself into your skull with occult-like synchronous incantations to enter the deepest pits of hell. As the over three minute song lures you into an entranced state of false securities, you are quickly shoved into the Speed Metal heavy “Devilwolf”. Rich bass guitar lined verses, two-step drums, and quick chorus with a simple lyrical structure make for yet another aggressive powerhouse that demonstrates the group’s dexterity quite well.

But there’s also a good dose of Punk material to be found. “A Grisly End” has a much stronger foundation in that vein, though isn’t afraid to throw some very brief Crossover Thrash elements into the chorus and some following passages. It’s a brief track that doesn’t offer too much for the listener other than catchy riffs and horrific atmospheres, unlike “From Far Beyond” which, at first, sounds as though the main verses were a nod to the glory days of the Heavy Metal style. The bass guitar shines through here once more, giving it a bit of a Horror Punk crossed with Hardcore output towards the end. “Doctor Plague” has more of a melodic Punk approach with steady, tight riffs to maintain the hooks.

The Devil’s Work may not seem like anything more than just another entry to the Thrash Metal revival movement at first, and you’d be right in saying that. This album doesn’t really offer anything new or unique, instead building itself on the sound that once was and rarely is today. But what it does present is a fun, enjoyable nod to the early days of Black Metal and Thrash Metal, all the while digging around in other styles for added flair without allowing more fat to congeal and become harder to trim as time go on. All Hell‘s debut outing resurrects the dirtiness and once genuinely evil sounding environment that made parents in the eighties believe this breed of music would convert their children into the hardcore devil worshippers, something a lot of these newer bands today seem to greatly lack in their appreciation for the style of old. If you miss that era of solid Metal musicianship free of gimmicks and cheap frills, The Devil’s Work is a safe bet you’ll come back to far beyond the first couple of spins.
