Annihilation Time was a group that manages to recapture the old Punk sound with glory and a good Rock edge to it, making the style approachable again with the amount of rebellion and angst one might expect from the pioneers of the style. The group managed to release two EPs and three full-lengths before calling it a day, but due to staying rather low in the underground, not many have had the opportunity to experience this act. With catch material and a rough edge to the band’s overall performance, it’s no wonder why II has become an important album in the Punk scene that fans of the original sound will quickly flock to for the solid music, and the band’s ability to pull off that old-school sound with ease.

II starts off strong with “Imaginary Mirror”, a true throwback to the old school Punk style that will find nostalgia even in some old Rock songs. This becomes one of the stronger points of this release, coming off as a nice mixture of both, but still having a little more of a heavier, faster bite to it. The vocals are a rougher style that is typically harmonized a bit against the music, and right on key along with it. The music feels a little more laid back at times for a Punk approach, and songs like “Too High to Die” show that off nicely, being a rather simple song with catchy guitar hooks that can easily make the listener’s head start to bang involuntarily. Annihilation Time also manages to include some cowbell into the song, which just aids the nostlagic value of this release even more and just sounds nice in the bridge it appears in, even though it feels a like it might have been tacked on in the end.

Sometimes it seems like there’s two vocalists, such as with “The Worm” which has vocals that sound a little cleaner and younger then the already established vocals. This song also is a little more interesting as it takes on a heavy Stoner Rock sound in the music with a little more complexity in the guitars then in the other songs of the release. Of course, this isn’t the first “stoner” impression here, as there’s also “Too High to Die” which takes on a bit of a lyrical approach similar to what it typically found in the style, as well as some other references throughout the recording. But, while those elements sound pretty good, it’s the more aggressive elements of the recording that really show the most promise from the group. “Panic”, for example, really shows off an early Punk sound with what sounds like a Crossover or NWOBHM input that gives it a little more bite. The energetic performance from the band, as well as the vocalist, is also something to note with this song, and really makes it one of the stand out songs on the recording.

The only issue here is that the energy isn’t always felt throughout the recording. “Panic” and a few others are more like rare tracks then anything, as some songs feel like the enthusiasm isn’t there, though the music is still solid and the vocals manage to fit the music. “Dogends”, for example, just doesn’t feel like it has a lot of energy behind it. “Teenage Rebel” is the same way, though the more rebel anthem sound kind of makes up for it. It would have been nice to hear more songs like “Panic” as well as the faster, yet not that heavy “Fast Forward to the Gore” which gives off more of a Horror Punk vibe then anything, but still utilizes the harsh, rhaspy vocals. The opening of this song also sparks a great deal of interest due to it’s rather eery and haunting vibe, but it clashes with the general atmosphere of the album and feels a little out of place.

Overall, II by Annihilation Time is an album that definitely didn’t get the circulation it deserved, and that’s rather sad. While the album made it’s way through the Punk scene nicely, the music here is a throwback to the classic sound and approach of the style, and it’s done well enough that anyone who grew up arond that time, or has an appreciate for the style in general can walk right into it and be caught up with the hooks and Punk attitude. Aside a track that feels a little out of place, and a little less enthusiasm from the band on some tracks then what they should have given, II is a tight album that is well worth checking out, especially if you’re a fan of the early days of Punk’s glory.
