Easily the most belittled Annihilator album, Remains is a release that was pretty much all done by one member, Jeff Waters. In the actual booklet, he states that fact, as well as that it was recorded at the peak of the insanity in his life at that time, and that this release was an experimental one. So, why does everyone absolutely hate this release and drag it through the mud so badly? Remains is actually not that bad a release.

This album is basically where Annihilator started to change from thrash metal to groove metal, having many songs that fit into this style, as well as would be considered Pantera worship. Take the song “Dead Wrong” for example, which sounds like it was simply the song “Walk” stolen from Pantera. But, while the influence is there in the music, not all songs are a total rip off like “Wind” is. The album itself, however, does start off rocky with the first two tracks “Murder” and “Sexecution”, relying more on the rather irritating drums then guitars, and whispering vocals with sung chorus lines, as well as some random shouting at points. This patterns follows into the track “No Love”, which is alright the first time through, but will become rather bland the more you listen to it. The rest of the album, however, is actually worth giving a shot.

“Never” starts with a spoken intro that is absolutely true about today’s society and has a very driving simple guitar structure from start to end, and “Human Remains” is where the album really picks up with some faster music and more thrash roots, even though these aspects still lack the technical structuring that is commonly associated with Annihilator. “Wind” and “Tricks And Traps” are easily the stand out tracks on the release, since they are the most diverse and resemble the band’s sound over the past few years. “Wind” is more of a slower, haunting song that would be expected to appear on Set The World On Fire, while “Tricks And Traps” is a technical thrash track that gives off a feel of nostalgia, kicking back to the band’s first two albums. The rest of the album kind of follows suit with “Tricks And Traps”, aside the instrumental outro “Bastiage”, which ends the album the same way it starts: bland and boring.

On this version, there are two bonus tracks included. You have “It’s You”, which is basically a power ballad, and would have been better then any of the first three tracks on this song. It also shows that Jeff Waters has a pretty good singing voice that would have suited the 80’s hair metal scene! The last track, “Words From Jeff Waters” is exactly that, Jeff Waters speaking about the album to give you an inside look at how the album came about, which is nice and helps you to gain some appreciation for the album and understand the lyrics a little more.

Honestly, the only negative aspects to this release are the first few tracks, and the sound of the drum machine sounding rather techno, which Jeff admits was an inspiration due to his ex-wife in the “Words From Jeff Waters” tracks. Aside that, the rest of the album is actually pretty solid. It could have been better, of course, but still has material worth your time.
