Lifeforce Records are in no way strangers to putting out Split releases. With a good number of decent splits under their belt, the label pulls together two more “-core” bands to unleash yet another split effort. As We Fight, a Metalcore act from Denmark that formed back in 2001 and issued a few releases including three full-length studio recordings, and The Psyke Project, a Hardcore act that is also from Denmark that formed back in 2001 as well with just as many full-lengths but a few more other recordings, are brought together to release Ebola, an split that is expected to be a nine track monster of a release. But, just because these bands have existed for quite a while doesn’t mean this effort is going to actually be all that good.

Up first in this release is the Metalcore band As We Fight. While tagged by the Metalcore style, the group shows a stronger Hardcore presence on this release then anything else. The track “Shattered” starts off their set, and it doesn’t do that great a job at getting the listener a little riled up. The song has a alright presence. The music isn’t the most unique or dynamic, coming off with a more generic approach that, chances are good, you’ve heard once or twice before, even if you’re not a fan of Metalcore or even Hardcore. The general beat of the song is a little catchy, and the screaming vocals go well against the slower then mid-tempo of the recording. Other then that, there’s just nothing all that much to be said about this track. However, this boring and generic sound is definitely not all that the band offers on here, but with that statement there’s a stronger presence of less unique material.

“Save Me” feels like the band decided it would take a slower, more emotionally driven Killswitch Engage track and dumb it down to the generic stand point of “Shattered”, which is still a little better then that track. Then there’s “Bitter End” which is another mid-tempo track that has a little bit of a stronger Hardcore presence here, but at times, especially in the breakdown, you can’t help but feel that the band takes a good amount of influence from the band Chimaira. But, in defense of this band, it’s hard to not sound like either of those bands when you’re music is overly generic, and it’s almost impossible to say they don’t sound like other bands at the same time due to this. At least “Black Heart” has a bit of a stronger performance that gradually builds to a faster performance, still focusing in on a strong Hardcore presence with some hooks thrown in to be considered Metal, and retains a bit of an independent identity from those two, much in the same way that “Shattered” did, except this song actually offers some good, catchy music that won’t bore you to sleep.

Next, The Psyke Project contributes five songs for this release, and for being a Hardcore band, this group feels more energetic and aggressive then their Metalcore counterparts on this release. “We Came from Earth” hammers away with some decent Hardcore attitude, sticking to some strong screaming vocals that have a good amount of distortion on them, and the music becomes a little more technical then one may expect for a band of this style. The song is entertaining for a while, but then gradually slows down to a more Progressive approach through slow, Droning music that will remind the listening of bands like Neurosis or even Isis, though not as strong, and more in touch with their Hardcore roots.

These random slower or Droning elements don’t really appear in every song luckily, though the music can sometimes branch off into a darker, more sinister approach. “This Road to Hell” makes the best example. The song’s slower approach shows the band’s teeth, and the breakdown feels like it’s ready to charge forth at the listener, but the overall intensity never seems to fully attack. Instead, this track does go back off into a slower Progressive bit, but not one that feels too droning, instead coming off a bit more tribal in essence. Of all the songs in The Psyke Project‘s donated set, it’s the overly misued improper titling of replacing “A Thousand” with “A 1000” to look cool or just out of sheer laziness called “A 1000 Frozen Bodies” that brings a heavier, catchier Hardcore sense to the contributions. This track feels like the band is finally leaping for the throat, but this final attack only lasts a little more then two seconds, which is a bit of a let down considering the potential the song actually has.

Overall, Ebola isn’t one of the greatest split releases to be made available, but it’s also not one of the worst. Thanks to the rather generic material As We Fight incorporate, and the snarling authority that doesn’t fully lash out at the listener with The Psyke Project, it feels like these established bands still have a decent way to progress before they reach their full potential, though in the case of As We Fight that doesn’t seem too likely at this point. But, each band brings in a different sound for their material, and the general production on the release remains consistant between the bands, and not all the material here is bad. This isn’t something you’re going to want to rush right out and buy full price, but maybe if it’s at a decent discount or given as a gift you can better appreciate what decent songs exist on here. That or if you are a rabid Metalcore or Hardcore fan in general, this may be something worth sampling. Other thent hat, chances are good you won’t find much on here to really keep you coming back for more.
