“Awakened Into Impious Absolvement” spends a little more than a minute establishing an eerie atmosphere, as if trapped in the wet catacombs that the thunderous bass, echoed drums, and rich distortion of the guitars play off of perfectly. It may seem a bit much, but it winds up a wise decision to get listeners braced for what’s to come. Controlled mid-tempo aggression is littered with bursts of furious blast beats and slower doomish riffs that hammer hopelessness of a rawer nature into your skull, growing slower and even more uncompromising as time goes on. While it ends on a dismal, albeit infectious note, “Phoenix of Uncreation” crams that climactic groove into pure aggression with pulsating bass lines and a fantastic drum presence. While this makes up most of the song, there are a number of sudden drops in speed that leave you crawling towards the finish line that holds the same intensity as the start.
While Upon the Throne… of Eternal Blasphemous Death may only be two tracks long, this seven-inch presents just under twelve minutes of soul crushing Death Metal that reminds listeners why the wait for new Blaspherian recordings is worth being rabidly patient over. Dismal and crushing, both do their jobs quite well, creating an atmosphere that can be uncompromisingly brutal. These aren’t the best Blaspherian have to offer, more like b-sides that may have been cut from Infernal Warriors of Death, but this doesn’t mean they are bad or even filler by any stretch of the mind. Fans will feel right at home with Upon the Throne… of Eternal Blasphemous Death, as well as those unfamiliar with these Death Metal legends.
