“Fly” itself is a strong song, and it’s obvious why the band had chosen it to be the lead single off the album. The music comes at you with a great amount of melody that is softer then their previous releases, making for a great relaxing metal track that still has some great power within the music itself through well performed guitars and drums, as well as a strong vocal performance with plenty of fluid changes in the music throughout to keep the song from getting old really quick. Aside that, you have the Iron Butterfly cover song “In a Gadda Da Vida”, which is actually a well done cover that works out for the band by really just bringing the song to their signature sound and making it a pretty straight forward Power Metal that is as enjoyable as the original version of the song. However, this song winds up being the main reason to buy this if you either dislike “Fly”, or simply don’t want the CD because you have the song already. There is still one more track on here, an acoustic rendition of “Skalds and Shadows”, which is featured in it’s originality on A Twist in the Myth as well, but it really just doesn’t work in the long run, feeling a little drawn out and becomes very boring, very quickly.
Fly really winds up just being a piece for the die hard fans and collectors. The cover of “In a Gadda Da Vida” really is worth looking into, but if you cannot justify buying this CD whole, then it is suggested that you go ahead and pick up the song from an MP3 retailer. Outside that, the title track has been released, leaving no real reason to buy it outside of collection purposes, and the acoustic song on here is shockingly not all that great a release. It’s still a nice piece to have if you’re on a mission to collection Blind Guardian releases, but if you’re just a casual fan that wouldn’t really care, it’s still suggested to at least buy that cover track, as it genuinely is worth the time and money.
