If you have never heard a Black Metal band merge their sound with Country influences, then you are not alone. After reading that statement, are you now curious on what that would sound like? Well, you won’t have to look further to get a rough idea of this then the band Blood Cult, a Black Metal act from Illinois that adds some of the downhome Country roots to their music, and brings a rather odd release to the Metal audiences with We Are The Cult Of The Plains. While it’s not a bad album by any stretch of imagination, it’s still not one of the greatest releases out there, though it certainly is original.

We Are The Cult Of The Plains feels more like music that would accompany and old eighties slasher flick that involved stereotypes about rednecks in the backwater regions of the southern states in the United States. You could even sit back and listen to the a good majority of the album, such as the songs “Devil’s Sabbath”, “Ludi Cariales” and many more, and just picture the band performing the material on a makeshift stage in a barn during some sort of Halloween or Friday the 13th teenage dance. There are some songs on this release that are clearly more Black Metal inspired then the rest, such as the first track “My Forest Home”, as well as “Seeds”. Lyrically, it all pretty much feels as if the band were inspired by the Stephen King novel/film Children Of The Corn, with lyrics discussing He Who Walks Behind The Rows and such.

The production quality on We Are The Cult Of The Plains is not that bad, as it really plays into the whole blue collar feel of the album. The drumming seems to be quite clear, and the guitars don’t really use a distortion. The only thing about the instruments is the volume level on the album, which even with speakers cranked was still rather low. The vocals on here are not the traditional Black Metal shrieking either, but a higher pitched rhasp that is much lower and, during the heavier tracks where more distortion is utilized, can be drowned out quite easily. There are also backing vocals on some tracks that don’t use that, coming off more as straight forward hastily sung moments that are recorded at the same level, but never appear on tracks that don’t have a heavy Country influence to them.

While this release is definately something original, it sadly has many rather boring moments, which take the form of the tracks “Ludi Ceriales” and “Illinoisan Altar”. Both of these sound stemmed from Southern Rock acts and feature some traditional Country-based instruments as well. Even the guitar solos sound like something that Lynyrd Skynyrd would use. These tracks are ultimately just too long and become very drawn out after the first few minutes. While the album isn’t the most entertaining effort out there, it’s definately an interesting one that will make the listener stick through the release until it ends, much like watching an accident on the side of the road, you just can’t help it.

To put it simply, aside some more intense tracks, the only thing missing from this release are banjos. That really would have set the entire album up properly with the overall feel that it gives off. We Are The Cult Of The Plains is a release that will appeal to specific demographics. If you live on a farm, or reside in the deep south and have a sick personality or enjoy horror flicks such as Children Of The Corn, then Blood Cult is a band you will eat up. If not, much of this release will just sound, for lack of a better term, corny at best. But, it’s still worth checking out. Who knows, perhaps this brand of Country fried Black Metal will take off in the years to come, or is already so underground that none of us know of it’s importance to the Metal universe…
