Fart And Wiener Jokes was one of the most irritating albums to review, only because of one thing that hopefully is only for copyright protection. There is a low monotone beep in the background, behind everything, as if you’re about to receive an emergency warning on a radio or television or something, throughout the entire album. But, if that is actually just the label’s attempt to prevent piracy of this album, then this release is another comedic gem from Brian Posehn. Some of the funniest material on here will give you the most disturbing mental images, such as on “Slayer” where he discusses his philosophy on how two men having oral sex is not gay if you shout the word Slayer during it, as well as his stance on how he would best protect himself and his home on the track “Home Protection” involving him with a samurai sword.
Of course, these imagery-based jokes that will probably haunt and disturb you greatly if you actually picture them, voluntarily or involuntarily, But then, there are just some silly ones on here that will give you a good laugh. “iTunes” is a good laugh, which covers iTunes sudden reaction to an odd purchase that Brian made, and plenty of material that bashes himself, as well as real life incidents that happened to him, such as the stripper in the party bus incident that he retells on “Bachelor Party”. And, of course, he goes on about his alterations made to his “Wikipedia” page, as well as towards President Obama and the time leading up to the elections on, of course, “Obama”. However, nothing on here is far worse, or as hysterical, as the “Obi Wan Story” which involves Brian Posehn, Star Wars, and masterbation.
The only problems are some of the jokes are so short and have no segway into something else that there’s no real need for them. “Having A Baby” is a good example. You expect more to come from it, but, of course, nothing, just ending without a segway into the next segment with no real ending to it. Even the clip following, “Lost A Friend” is the same way, but unfortunately not as funny as as “Having A Baby” or even “Tip For the Couples”. There’s also “My Four Hobbies Redux”, which is just a shortened, updated version of “Show a Little Neck” from the Live In: Nerd Rage album, and nowhere near as funny. There’s also two new songs on here, which, if you expect something like “Metal By Numbers” off the Live In Nerd Rage album, then you’ll be kind of let down here. “More Metal Than You” retains some satyrical lyrics about the mentality of some people into Metal, and “The Gambler” is a genuine Metal cover song of the original by Kenny Rogers. Both are intense and well constructed tracks that will have you banging your head, even if “More Metal Than You” actually does get a little bland after a while.
Fart & Wiener Jokes is a good live stand-up comedy album, with plenty of great jokes that will keep you laughing through the CD, with the occassional jokes that seem like they should be funny but just aren’t due to how little time is spent with them, or going too far with the joke to the point where you feel you got the point and want to move right along to the next. Brian Posehn gives us the kind of performance you would expect from him, but it could have been better. This is good for a few laughs the first few times through, but after a while it’ll probably sit there until you just randomly decide to break it out again and give it a listen.
