After a fairly successful album through Hells Headbangers in 2010 titled It’s Time to Face the Doomsday, the Mad Max style Crossover Thrash and Punk group Children of Technology have returned once more. This exclusive seven-inch EP features two brand new cuts from the band that fans can sink their teeth into, though not always in the post-apocalyptic atmosphere or lyrical sense their previous album established. But, do these offer up enough reason to fork over the necessary cash for just under seven minutes of music, or does this effort leave the fans wanting a lot more, but in a negative manner?

Mayhemic Speed Anarchy is surprisingly crisp for a release from Hells Headbangers. The guitars sound just a little muffled, but still has a cleaner distortion to them that comes through with a mid-range presence that still offers a pretty heavy sound, especially against the sharper guitar solos. The bass is pretty deep, as well as loud, but not at a level where it becomes the primary concern either. The drumming sounds great too, having some clear lower snaps from the snares, and a nice click to the bass kick. However, the cymbals show a little bit of wash out that isn’t too bad, but still can be picked up when you pay closer attention to it. Thankfully it doesn’t affect all of them, as some come through fine. Finally there’s the louder vocals that are your harsher, enthusiastic approach, which can sometimes head into falsetto territory. This sounds perfect against the catchier Punk infused Thrash riffs.

“Mayhemic Speed Anarchy” starts off with crowds chanting and some whispering, getting louder as the vocalist starts talking over them, misleading you into expecting this to be a live EP. Once the song title is mentioned with layered vocals, the two-step Punk influence comes in with a good deal of energy, and a strong focus on the cymbals that are a bit further in the background. The song is more of a simpler offering, but absolutely infectious all around, moreso in the main riffs and guitar solo. Towards the end, things get a bit more chaotic with gang chants, and you’ll immediately start feeling what adrenaline exists coursing through your veins for a little longer. After this memorable offering closes with repetative and altered chanting of the song’s title, the Black Uniforms cover, “Computer World,” kicks in. The typical Punk vibe is present with some catchy Rock-esque riffs at the start, as well as the end. The vocals take on more of a harsher approach to suit the original performance as well, and the chorus picks up a little more speed to it in the process. Again, the performance doesn’t really hit as hard as it should, but it’s clear the band is having fun playing the track, and you’ll catch your head bobbing along to this one like it would for “Mayhemic Speed Anarchy.”

This is an EP that fans of Children of Technology do need to check out at some point soon. Mayhemic Speed Anarchy throws you back to the more aggressive Crossover Thrash days, and “Computer World” is just a well executed Punk cover song that doesn’t quite fit the post-apocalyptic terrain the band treads. There’s also the issue of the cymbals having some washout over certain ones, which doesn’t really show through all the time. If you can look past that issue, chances are good you’ll warmingly embrace this recording. Mayhemic Speed Anarchy isn’t quite a substitute for a new full-length album, but if you’ve been a loyal fan of Children of Technology, there’s nothing holding you back from adding this one to your collection as well.
