Black Metal, as a whole, has the ability to transcend the restraints of what initially defined it. It’s also one of the most cherished of styles within the Metal world for this very reason and how it helps define a sense of originality within its fans. Sadly, this sense of self-identification can lead to divides. On one hand you have those who feel it should rarely (if ever) deviate from the concepts laid out during the first and second waves. On the other you have those that feel lines should be blurred, often mixing in styles like Hardcore, Shoegaze, and even Sludge Metal. Enter Conjuro Nuclear to this equation. This is a one-piece Black Metal/Darkwave outfit helmed by an individual known simply as “Emesis” that hails from Madrid, Spain. The entity was formed in 2012, issued a self-released debut full-length in 2013 titled Luna Ilena y Radiacion, and followed that up with this year’s Conjuro Nuclear. But do these two styles work with each other in pure harmony, or is the ball dropped somewhere along the way in what should be a likely merger?

Like most underground Black Metal efforts, this too is a raw recording. However, given the Darkwave, Punk, even Horror Punk atmospheres, the lack of razor sharp distortions works to create a far more blunt, even haunting seventies to early eighties environment. “Conjuro Nuclear” is a prime example of how well it works. The vocals are buried deep in the background, almost inaudable against the catchy, dirty back alley tone of the pulsing bass and clean lead hooks. The heavy echo on the drums (which actually sound like they’re from a machine) pushes a cold sensation that further disconnects this track and many others from reality in order to properly mold together the Black Metal concepts with an Industrial attitude with infectious eerieness of the aforementioned Darkwave sound. The only problem is that “Oscura Lisergia” sounds imilar to it outside the fact that there are more vocals present, as well as some varied lead hooks in and around the chorus, leading to a maddening output about two minutes in.

While most of the effort falls into that category of “infectiously haunting,” some cuts can be a little more visceral. “Divinorum” sounds a lot rougher overall thanks to richer distortions and a stronger presence from the bass guitar, while the vocals sometimes get pulled forward in the mix as well. Even the guitar solo and NWOBHM-style hooks that build some grander landscapes sound like they are meant to be clean, but still come through pretty dirty. Then there’s “Bosque de Craneos,” which carries an odd introduction that mixes Spaghetti Western with cheesy sixties-era Science Fiction at first. As it progresses, you are given some cleaner piano notes and even a solid Gothic Rock performance from the guitars that sound close to “Sarah Lou” by Sinamore that is sped up and built on more and more, but still ends up sounding incredibly thin by the end.

And then there are just times where the analog recording just shoots the album in the foot. “Visiones Toxicas” is a solid song overall, but the levels are just too high at times, leaving the keyboards and even some of the riffs to come through insanely loud and shrill, producing an ear splitting feedback over them. Of course “Caros Radiactivos,” the instrumental that follows, is surprisingly easy and soothing on the mind. This is the least haunting one, leaving “Atomizacion” and “Ecos de la Noche” to show off the power these slower performances can have.

Conjuro Nuclear may have only been around for two years, but this self-titled outing is an incredibly refined love letter to the two genres that essentially go together like peanut butter and jelly. There’s a subtle rebellious aggression behind most tracks, though some have a little more of a feral output, all the while having a cold, burdening, haunting atmosphere to them that has the strength to just pull you away from reality at a moment’s notice. Not everything works out due to the raw audio or just the fact that some cuts can begin to sound alike in many ways, but for the most part Conjuro Nuclear hits with just enough power to leave a lastng impression on the listener that will have him or her hungry and coming back for more.
