While heavy and crisp, you can’t help but sense a lighter environment throughout the release. The guitars aren’t the heaviest, holding a higher pitch to the distortions used, while the bass is rich and deep, a stark contrast to its counterparts. The vocals are your standard Shadows Fall style of rougher shouting or harmonizations. Finally there’s the drum kit. The cymbals crash loudly without being too overbearing, and the bass kicks have a nice click that is tight and to the point. However, the snares snap with authority, and the clearer sound captured makes you feel them in your brain every time they’re hit.
Like you might expect, this recording shifts between Hardcore and Metalcore. “Shattered Frames” has some complexity in the riffs, and the timing is well executed as it jumps between slower chords and the somewhat technical passages. The chorus has a stern sound carried from the mid-paced bass kicks, and assertive groove akin to an attitude Pantera would boast. This relies more on being catchy, as well as making the guitar squeel, than others do, such as “Get Lost or Get Dead.” This one has a faster tempo with a stronger focus on two-stepping and the twang of the bass guitar. The chorus shifts into a similarly quick, but largely melodic piece with plenty of vocal harmonizations before a commanding and energetic breakdown hits with little warning. There’s also the instrumental “Chainsaw of Bees,” which is as intense as you would expect from the title. Consistant drumming at the start leads into a catchy Metalcore influenced offering with dditional hooks thrown about. A little less than two minutes, the breakdown hits with a low, punishing, though interesting trance-enducing performance that bleeds into the high-speed “Drown the Light,” similar to the aforementioned title track.
Get Lost or Get Dead shows great creative chemistry between each member. None of those involved in other groups seem to assert their influence over someone else’s. Instead, Death Ray Vision creates a fun and solid five song EP that blends the varying musical backgrounds of each member, shifting between melodic Metalcore bits and authority driven Hardcore with ease. If you happen to be a fan of either group’s work, or the two styles in general, checking out Get Lost or Get Dead by Death Ray Vision is simply a must you won’t soon regret.
