Formed in 2003 and hailing from the Netherlands, De Magia Veterum is an Avant-Garde Black Metal outfit that has stayed the course in the shadows of the underground world. ‘M’ (Mories) is the sole member, but a very busy individual. Not only are there four EPs and three full-length albums under this project’s belt, he’s also involved with Cloak of Altering and Gnar Their Tongues, Aderlating, Seirom, and Pompidou, as well as a former member of a few others. But, concerns about being overworked don’t seem to really matter, as all the releases from De Magia Veterum seem to earn varied responses from fans and critics alike, though the EPs tend to be frowned upon more. So, does his fourth outing, The Deification, stand tall with the others, or is this one that is best to be overlooked?

Things kick off with a brief introduction thanks to “Eradication.” It’s a creepy little piece that sounds more like a short atmospheric score to an eighties Horror flick, especially given how sudden it fades out. In no way does it reflect the rest of the album, which is its only major downfall. “Thorns” is a chaotic piece of pure hatred and nightmarish delights. The guitar riffs sound pulled right from the most vile of mankinds darkest imaginations, and about two minutes in pushes a bit of an epic tone through hate soaked speed and intensity, all before slowing down to a trudging pace with whispering that builds up to another burst of insanity. But, it’s the next track, “Passage,” that really amps things up. This song focuses more on atmosphere, and works to create what feels like a descent straight into the bowels of Hell. The vocals sound vile and more like demonic ramblings than actual lyrics. Varied breaks in the music to accentuate elements like that, and a later burdening sensation of reaching the end of your fall, albeit only temporarily, being met by said demons pounding away in the distance with additional static to make it more demonic and impossible to walk away from unscathed. There’s a good deal of technicality, and some parts do end up sounding like random riffs thrown together, but it only works to push the musical imagery further into your skull.

This sensation is only met again by some of the deeper tones that “Shall Not Take Form” possesses. The snarling, altered growls sounds absolutely menacing during the chaos-driven passages, but the rhaspy approach that ends up more in the background of the stricter Black Metal passages compliment the shifting well. While sudden, you never feel as though it was some kind of knee jerk reaction for the sake of being Avant-Garde, but more like an exploration through this hellish world that “Passages” established earlier, reaching the climax of this journey into the most vile depths of Hell with “The Deification.” The music is far more chaotic with a good number of timing changes and cleaning on the drums similar to that of scavengers going through garbage cans in search of food. The performance itself is kind of unsettling, using the drums to create varied processions to your own demise, and random high pitched guitar squeels that pause the madness for a brief moments before the vile, growling beings lash out and start to tear your flesh from your very bone. The album ends rather abruptly, and while it doesn’t make you want more, it leaves you complete, as if the whole experience were some kind of experiment or hallucination that just stops out of nowhere.

The Deification shows the potential Mories has to create musical worlds of absolute chaos, the kind that only lives in the deepest pits of the human mind. While what I experienced and interpret are visions of Hellish descent brought on by some kind of hallucination, government experimentation, or pure madness, it definitely isn’t going to be the same for everyone. If you’re a fan of Avant-Garde Black Metal and haven’t heard De Magia Veterum yet, this is the perfectly place to start. The only fault that can really be picked out is the introductory track, “Eradication,” not working with what the other six tracks present to the listener, but it could easily be bypassed and obtain the same impact from the twenty-eight minutes of unstable mental imagery that follows.
