All Hell Breaks Loose is easily one of Destruction‘s most well known efforts, if not by the music but then by the artwork. When it came out it was hard not to see the album on store shelves. Even to this day it’s still a readily accessible album at many used CD stores, and for good reason. All Hell Breaks Loose is basically what the title implies as far as the music goes. This album is full of fast paced, hard hitting Thrash goodness, and is one of the releases that really pushed Destruction into the spotlight of the metal world. If you happened to miss out, don’t worry, as this release is also one of three newly reissued and remastered versions of the band’s mid-career discography, and it’s never sounded better.

This release also finds the band returning to their Thrash roots after issuing some questionable material that even the band frowns upon, which is fantastic news for the fans. For the most part, the music here comes at a pretty fast pace with some great guitar work that sometimes gets a little more technical then some tracks. However, there are times where the band does tone things down and bring a simpler sound to the mix, such as the track “World Domination of Pain”. While this track does still utilize some more technical chords and drumming here and there, much of it is just a slower paced in-your-face song that takes command with guitars that sound relentless and intimidating with drumming that often brings a bitch of a marching feel to the desolate end-of-the-world atmosphere this song creates. There’s also the following track “X-treme Measures” which boasts the same kind of musicianship, leading more into a marching anthen the “World Domination of Pain” was as far as the guitars goes, but the song does capture any real sort of musical atmosphere other then trying to be intimidating. Sadly, this track doesn’t really work out for the album and actually comes off a bit weak compared to the rest of the material.

However, the faster songs on this release are really where the band does shine. Sadly, much like “X-treme Measures”, there’s no real atmosphere to the music being played, but what is being played is simply solid, intense Thrash. Of course, the album has it’s generic “Intro” track that doesn’t do anything to really set up the album or prepare the listener, but the good news about it is that it’s less then a minute in length and bleeds into the first actual song of the album, “The Final Curtain”. This song, as well as much of the first half of this album, is really where your attention will be, as these songs just come right at you with intense music that never lets up. “Machinery of Lies”, however, is one of the standout tracks on the album. While it’s rather similar to “The Final Curtain”, it’s much faster, infact one of the fastest tracks off the album to begin with, and uses that speed to it’s advantage to create a very commanding song that goes straight for the listener’s throat. However, after “World Domination of Pain”, things become a bit tricky.

As mentioned, “X-treme Measures” isn’t all that great a song, and some of the latter tracks here do feel a bit tacked on at times. The title track, “All Hell Breaks Loose”, is another great faster paced track in the vein of the material at the start of the album, but incorporates some music that sounds like it was meant to be evil and intimidating, and at times it works, but the song ultimately just feels drawn out and starts to get a bit repetitive. “Visual Prostitution”, however, is a rather generic-sounding Thrash track that features some great technical guitar riffs outside the bass-heavy main verses, and just bleeds an old-school Thrash sound. The firs time through this song may leave the listener wanting a little more, but it’s a song that fans of Thrash will grow to love after a few spins and finds it stands out on it’s own thanks to how it’s composed.

The 2010 reissue of All Hell Breaks Loose is a nice piece for fans. First of all, the album comes with the original artwork in a digipack form, has the original booklet, and a bonus piece that goes over the band’s history a bit for those new to Destruction. The digipack is also numbered, as this, and the other two Destruction reissues, are limited to only two thousand pressings. This reissue also features six bonus tracks, however these bonus tracks are the six songs that make up Destruction‘s 1984 demo Bestial Invasion of Hell, and were originally made available to the public through the limited edition two disc version of All Hell Breaks Loose, and actually doesn’t contain the Metallica cover “Whiplash” that appeared as a hidden track on some versions of the original release. If fans of the band missed out on the limited edition version, then that right there is reason enough to pick this up, but there’s more. Aside the limited availability and bonus tracks, the entire album, including the bonus demo tracks, have been remastered to 24 bit, and they have never sounded better. These remastered tracks come together on one gold disc instead of two, leading for one of the clearest remasters of this album you will get at this point.

Any fan of Destruction obviously has this album, and perhaps many other fans of metal in general. All Hell Breaks Loose is an album that has stood the test of time, and outside a few moments where things feel drawn out, the album is still an energetic redeeming Thrash ride, and the 2010 reissue/remaster just makes things even better. If you haven’t had the opportunity to hear this recording yet, then now is your best time to check this pivotol recording out.
