The Denmark Brutal Death Metal act Die is a very impressive new band within their field, as well as a not so well known band at the moment. While the band was formed back in 2005 and have issued two demos and a single, Rise of the Rotten is the group’s debut full-length album, and unfortunately there hasn’t been too much promotional coverage for this great release. It’s sad to see this release kind of sit in the background a bit due to a lack of proper promotions here in the States, especially since this release is loaded with impressive and rather unique song compositions, but, at the same time, Rise of the Rotten doesn’t quite drive the necessary impact home for a band in the Brutal Death style until a little ways in.

There is no denying that Die has some great ideas as far as their brand of Brutal Death Metal goes, and in many ways they manage to pull their ideas off nicely. One listen to “Dead Flesh Makeover” and you’ll be hooked on this release. Well, for the most part. While this track really hammers away with it’s intense drumming and fantastic guitar riffs and complex hooks, this is one of the very few songs that have any real intensity behind them that would cause you to be motivated in any way. Like the other few tracks on here that really have an impact, it moves at a rather fast pace with great drumming that really drives the speed home, as well as complex guitar chords that keep the pace of the music perfectly, all working against a gutteral vocal performance that sounds almost like it crosses the border into just angry shouting, but without really violating the previous vocal approad, much like it’s just a louder, more commanding and clear gutteral roar. It’s around this time that the album starts to pick up, and often doesn’t really let up.

Unfortunately, this all means that the tracks before “Dead Flesh Makeover” aren’t really all that exciting, and really they aren’t. They’re good tracks that are definitely heavy and well composed, but they wind up being overly technical and just not as entertaining after the first or second time through the album. “Execution Room” and “Soul Scavenger” really don’t do too much in the line of the impact they have on the listener, and come off rather bland in the end, though the speed is essentially the same as the rest of the album, as well as the drums. There’s just nothing all too special about these tracks outside of some moments where the intensity will pick up here and there thanks to the vocal performance. In the case of “Soul Scavenger”, it’s mostly due to the track’s length and that there are elements that seem tacked on, or parts that seem to just be beaten to the death with repetition. “Soil Became Flesh” has some promise, but still falls into place with the other two tracks before it. It does, however, uses audio samples effectively by having a short clip to introduce the track and comes out pretty strong, and throws more in the lines of clips into the track in the background of the music, which really sounds nice instead of just having the traditional sample at the start and end.

It seems like Rise of the Rotten really just seems to build on it’s self more and more as you go through it, with each track actually being just as good, if not better, then the last one you heard. “Dread Lord” is a great example, as the song really is more intense of a listen then “Dead Flesh Makeover” is mostly thanks to the well paced, yet consistantly speedy, drum work. The closing track, “Gore Monger”, however, is really where this release shines as the music is just so much more intense compared to the rest of the album that you’ll wind up far more captivated by the madness here alone then anywhere else. The guitar solos throughout the album are great, but this one in particular is simply perfect mayhem that matches with the anger and rage that the music gives off from start to finish, closing Rise of the Rotten off perfectly that you want to immediately go back and start from scratch again, even knowing the first three songs on here aren’t necessarily the best.

Die is a band to keep an eye on, as this band has the potential to stand out in the crowd of Death Metal acts that take things to a whole other musical level. While Rise of the Rotten is a great release, it does feature a few starting tracks that feel a bit out of place that could have been more with a little more work, with the real exceptional material kicking in a little later. But, either way, this album is still a fantastic listen by a very promising new act, and it’s worth your attention in any form possible to check out.
