Hell Bent for Leather starts off with a little background information on Don Jamieson and a few song titles that relate to marriage, as well as a little bit of Rock and Metal eduction with “That Metal Show, Wedding Songs & Guns n’ F@ckin’ Roses.” That bit of trivia knowledge Don talks about is how poor Guns n’ Roses were when Appetite for Destruction came out and how they lived. You will also learned that, if you see Richard Christy (Howard Stern, The Elite) at a concert, it’s best to avoid contact with him, especially in the pit. Then there’s “The Liquor Store Bar, Balls & Magical Vagina,” which has some good jokes about the vagina as well. These range from describing vaginas after childbirth, followed with quick jabs at how gross male genitalia is. But it’s “Thank You Louis CK, Trendy Stoners” with the best one-liner you’ll be quoting around anyone willing to listen during a joke about pot usage Justin Bieber.
The best bit from the album is the “Bad Dates, Dead Cats & Terrorist Ants.” Aside talking about his previous relationship fumbles, especially one about a black woman who dumped him mid-date, the other two tales are about his new home in New Jersey he bought with his girlfriend. Immediately after moving in he has to pull a dead cat out from under the porch. It’s a simple tale that paints a small mental image of his frustration, though calling the audience racist when they laugh about the neighbor remark would have been perfectly timed. Of course the terrorist ants towards the end will have you cracking up laughing, as the comparisons do actually make sense and probably will change your perception on them.
The only thing about this album that I personally couldn’t get into were most of the sex jokes. This isn’t because they weren’t funny, it’s just not really my thing. Most hit during “Motley Crue, AC/DC & My Awful Sideburns,” where he talks about going down on his girlfriend and how his sideburns come into play, as well as jokes about the size of his penis compared to Tommy Lee’s (which, by the way, thanks for that mental image I can’t unthink Don Jamieson). The comments about honking horns, however, is worth the mental scarring. But then there’s “A Mexican, Edward Scissorhands & a Missing Arm” that talks about his girlfriend once more, but not quite the same way. The discussion about how she barks during sex, how he hasn’t cut his toe nails for months, and giving the drummer of Def Lepard a man’s arm come out of nowhere and are just as comical.
And then there’s what seem to be awkward cuts that randomly hit. I can understand in some spots it’s probably for time, or cutting out some words Don Jamieson tripped ober. But a lot of times it just sounds like they only removed two seconds max. I’ve heard comedy albums where it’s a cut between tracks, but here it’s just during a bit, or right in the middle of a joke or punchline. At first it’s just odd, but by the end these little sudden jumps just become as irritating as the jokes or shots at the audience that clearly need to be seen in order to get, which only makes you wish Hell Bent for Laughter was a DVD instead of just a CD.
In the end, Hell Bent for Laughter is a good stand-up comedy album. If you’re a fan of That Metal Show and know Don Jamieson from there or his comedy, you’re going to enjoy this album. It’s clear Don Jamieson is having a good time on stage, and the crowd interactions he stirs up sound great, but really need to be seen more than just heard in some cases. Between sex jokes, some I’m sure others will enjoy more than me, Metal references and shots at the crowd, it’s ends up a somewhat raunchy good time that’s as funny as it is honest.
