Through the years of this band’s existence, Fairyland has gone through three name changes, as well as have lost every founding band member (under this moniker) aside keyboardist Philippe Giordana, leaving him the only member of the band at the time to record Score To A New Beginning, the third full length album from this act. Due to this event, we find that not only are guest musicians brought in, but the total rounds out to sixteen members total from various bands (just look above this review for the full list is you didn’t notice it already). Clearly, repetition won’t really be an issue when approaching this album, but does that also affect the album’s consistency to present a solid album that tells a tale from start to finish?

There really isn’t anything that wrong about the album. Despite the amoun of guest band members, they are utilized properly, having certain individuals only on certain songs, or having vocalists play off other individuals in this tale, leading to a nice overall operatic feel through the album. Another perk is that, while pretty much every vocalist performs the exact same way, there is great diversity in how the vocalists themselves sound, with maybe only one or two sounding really close to one each other, and each one very talented at what they do, especially the performance on the track “Godsent” adding a further vartiety to the mix given the lead vocalist’s emphasis, and the lower mock-gutteral vocals utilized in the background leading up to the chorus. What really stands out on this release, however, would be the harmony between keyboard solos, and the guitar solos, which flow smoothly between each other, or while they both perform at the same time.

While this is perhaps the most solid sounding album musically, and adding the vast amount of various guest musicians to really push the conceptual album aspect further, the music on Score To A New Beginning is just not quite as good as the band’s previous album. This is more then likely due to the departure of all the members that helped make the band what it was and knew how to approach it, and having other members, established or otherwise, come in and perform with only one founding member’s ideas as to how the release sounds. While it doesn’t sound good as impressive, it’s still a formidable entry into the band’s discography. It may start off a bit rocky, but once you hit “A Soldier’s Letter”, the album only builds up steam with each track, but doesn’t quite seem to really end or have some sort of epic climax you would expect. Instead, after the rather tame “Rise Of The Giants” instrumental, and the title track “Score To A New Beginning” which just sounds a bit out of place and as if it were heavily inspired by Dream Theater. Sadly, this brings no closure to the album, and leaves the listener wanting more.

If you’re into this style and approach to metal, then Score To A New Beginning will enthral you for most of the album. While many still contest, and in many ways are right, that this is nothing more then Rhapsody worship, the music found on this release is still very well done and wonm’t leave you claiming that the orchestral-like elements were too much. It’s just a little disheartening that it isn’t as good as the band’s second release, The Fall Of An Empire, but there are plenty of tracks later on that do make up for everything, even if the ending does feel like a bit of a drawn out slap in the face. The overall final product is still worth a listen, and shows a lot of impressive musicianship from a lot of different individuals that many fans of the Power Metal style will more then likely recognize, and quickly embrace the project with already open arms.
