Big Trouble in Little Vagina is the band’s second official label release. The first was the A Split Worse Than Death recording, which was also issued through Grindscene Records. It makes sense that Foetal Juice would re-record two of their strongest songs, hoping to use them to attract more listeners to their twisted, quirky sexual themed Death Metal music. he first is the 2012 single “Brewkakke,” which is an infectious track that definitely benefits from the stronger audio quality. The semi-sharpened buzz of the guitars gives a bit of a creepy tone in a few spots, though some bridges don’t quite sound as tight as the main verses or the chorus, both of which hold plenty of energy to make the song a fun experience. Then there’s “Semen Evil, Smear No Evil,” which comes off their 2010 self-titled EP. While heavy on the bass, the crisp drumming just brings everything together perfectly, adding a ruthless sensation to some of the riffs, especially when they usher in some additional groove.
And then you have the new compositions, starting with “Big Trouble in Little Vagina.” This loses some of that quirky sexual humor despite the name playing on the movie title Big Trouble in Little China. The music isn’t bad, but finds some standard aggressive riffs which carry a decent enough rhythm that you’ll catch your head bobbing along here and there, but there’s very little that leaves a lasting impression. “Serpents of the Northern Lights,” however, ends up far more hostile cut, taking advantage of the deeper bass by using a little more complexity in the guitar chords and truly hostile raspy vocal presence. Even the atmosphere comes off incredibly grim much of the time, something the other songs simply don’t have. “Service Station Masturbation” makes up for that with unrestricted energy and aggression, hammering away at the listener with material that is not only infectious, but demanding you destroy everything and everyone in sight, especially during the impressively chaotic blast beat sections that basically erupt out of nowhere.
Big Trouble in Little Vagina is a nice additional introduction to Foetal Juice‘s earlier split contributions, even if it is just three new songs. “Brewkakke” and “Semen Evil, Smear No Evil” take advantage of the stronger audio quality, sounding somewhat better than the original versions, but the title track really fails to hit the mark that “Serpents of the Northern Lights” and “Service Station Masturbation” hit. Even though the early Exhumed to Impaled style has been done to death at this point, Foetal Juice manage to make the bludgeoning material incredibly fun, producing a few tracks that can make you want to break the nearest face, and if done right live, could easily make the mosh pit devour the local venue whole.
