One of the most well known names in the Death Metal world return with their ninth full-length effort, Burial Ground, and of course it’s just what you would expect from the band. Again, we find Grave pumping out some strong, old-school Death Metal material, the kind of Metal that this band is well known for, and Burial Ground is easily one of the best band’s best releases today. But, in the same sense, the band seems to be looking at this release in a more experimental state thanks to the track lengths. While longer tracks aren’t really an unknown aspect to Grave albums, it’s rare to see the band peak past songs of eight minutes, let alone have more then one song of a longer length on one release. The good news about this is that these songs are so well constructed that they hold your attention the whole time, much like everything else about this album.

Burial Ground finds a lot of diversity for Grave as far as the music goes. You have your mix of slower paced material, but that material seems to be well blended with mid and fast paced materials. “Conqueror” is the perfect example of this due to the song being more of a straight forward faster paced Death Metal track that eventually breaks off into a more Sludge oriented slower pace about a third of the way into the song. While this part does feel a little repetitive, the song seems to just build upon it by having an impressive guitar solo thrown in, some vocals at times, and then just adds more to the instruments to make it just sound heavier as you progress, and almost faster, even though the overall pace of the track hasn’t really picked up, ending on the same fast paced note that it started with. “Dismembered Mind” essentially follows this path as well, except this one starts off at that slow Sludge pace for about a minute and a half before it kicks into high gear for a good while, then back to the slower pace around six minutes before the guitar solo rips your face off. These are two of the most unique tracks on here, and for “Dismembered Mind”, which reaches to eleven minutes, the constant changing musical pace really does keep you listening until the very end. While it’s not the most addictive song on the album, it will continue to bring you back.

While the Sludge feel to the music isn’t nothing new, it does work out for the album and really adds to the impact that the songs have. But, really, it’s the faster moments that often make Burial Ground a Death Metal gem. “Sexual Mutilation” is just a fast paced track that really doesn’t let up. While it does have a slower section that feels uncalled for, it doesn’t really hurt the music being there before the guitar solo kicks in and everything goes absolutely nuts. “Bloodtrail” is another fast paced gem on here that doesn’t even take that uneccesary momentary slow paced rest that “Sexual Mutilation” has, but instead of just a furious Death Metal assault that simply doesn’t let up. These two are really the only two genuine fast paced tracks (from start to finish) on the album, as the rest do still seem to mess around with the speeds of the songs. The rest of the album, aside the longer tracks, are composed of intense songs that seem to vary between a mid-tempo to a fast paced feel, such as the starting tracks “Liberation” and “Semblence In Black”, the latter being one of the best tracks off the album mostly thanks to the intense drumming and added cymbol crashes that make the chorus and intense closing bridge really stand out and make you want to start up a mosh pit of your own.

When all is said and done, Burial Ground is definitely one of Grave‘s best works in ages, and really finds them continuing to build on the blueprint that was their last album, Dominion VIII. The only let down is that the band really stepped back from a lot of the faster, harder hitting material that they have been known for, which is a shame as the few songs on here that showcase this from start to finish are very promising and leave you begging for more. This is an interesting new direction for Grave that is being finely crafted, but at times it just feels exhausting. There’s no doubt that Burial Ground will have you coming back for repeat listens, as the band’s ability to build the intensity from a slow, chugging feel really makes the album feel almost epic at times that simply doesn’t get boring.
