Like many other Hells Headbangers efforts, this is yet another raw sounding release. The guitars have a mild buzzing distortion that does give the effort a bit of sharper Black Metal touch that the deeper bass presence compliments well. The bass kicks of the drum kit are a bit of a richer thud, while the snares simply sound tight, and the cymbals somewhat crisp to fill the music better than it probably should. Finally there’s the heavily distorted vocals. You can kind of make out what is being growled or shouted, but due to how rich the effect is, sometimes they are impossible to make out, especially with how they seem to be more in the background than anything.
This EP is split up into two parts. “RITUAL I – Elevation of Sun” definitely has some catchy music to it. The Black Metal influence is really hard to ignore, set up more as a foundation that is a little on the slower side. This gives the material an infectious, ritualistic touch that anyone can truly appreciate, especially in some of the bridges that just soak up the muddy atmosphere quite well, especially towards the end when the material sounds far more dismal. Meanwhile, “RITUAL II – Prophecy of Doom” doesn’t quite reach those trance-enducing depths, but still showcases more of a violent side of the band. The echo effect on the vocals make it sound a little more other worldly as faster riffs hammer away at the listener at a much quicker pace. There are some slower bridges that occur throughout the release as well. There’s a strong guitar solo towards the end, and it really pays off at making things a little more hostile than they already were, stopping a good two-thirds of the way through for a slow build up that sounds more like a random breakdown that tries hard to become more of an epic passage, and in some ways does come off like that to end the EP with.
Hic Iacet present two brand new songs on one seven-inch EP, and they do a fantastic job with them. The only downfall is that this EP is just under eleven minutes, as it definitely leaves you wanting to hear more from them. If you haven’t heard this group yet, then you definitely will need to give this recording a shot, especially if you’re on the side of the raw Black and Death Metal market. Prophecy of Doom by Hic Iacet will rattle you to the core with infectious riffs and intense speed in that order.
