“High Spirits” kicks the recording off with a rather laid back NWOBHM-style performance. The louder bass is rich and deep, complimenting the lower chugs of the guitars well, while the drums help create an uplifting rhythm against the layered vocals in the chorus. There plenty of great leads throughout, and the guitar solo is a solid performance. “Night After Night,” however, finds the lead hooks creating a sort of sixties Doo-Wop performance with a deeper edge. It’s an interesting touch that sounds like a skipping record in the main verses, and the clean singing seems pushed a bit further in the background. While a decent cut, it feels like the definition of a b-side, perhaps sounding better in the writing stage but didn’t come out as strong in the studio. This song causes High Spirits to become a tough decision, making it more a purchase for vinyl collectors or serious fans of the band, Chris, or vintage Heavy Metal in general only.
