When you mention the name Insomnium at this point, everyone has an opinion, and for the most part it’s always something positive. While not quite a household name, they have come incredibly far in the Melodic Death Metal world when you look back at their 2002 debut album In the Halls of Awaiting through Candlelight Records. Over the years the band continued to hone their sound on that highly apt label, and for 2011 shifted to Century Media Records. This relationship continues for the band’s sixth full-length effort, Shadows of the Dying Sun, easily their most anticipated album to date. This also marks the first major release for the band to feature guitarist Markus Vanhala (Omnium Gatherum), who first brought his skills into the band’s 2013 EP Ephemeral. But is this the recording fans have been waiting for, or is this the first time the band churns out something below their established standards?

Much like their more recent recordings, Shadows of the Dying Sun is a dark and beautiful album full of fluid music, emotional performances, as well as a crisp production. This is felt immediately with “The Primeval Dark.” The performance fades in slowly with some catchy guitar riffs. Twenty-eight seconds later the drums kick in, and from this point the introduction builds to a dark, burdening performance with chugging chords that keep expanding until it becomes a very dynamic, almost over-the-top melodic performance that accomplishes a lot in a very short amount of time. This also bleeds into “While We Sleep,” a truly infectious piece that carries more of a glorious chorus against softer guitars, singing and drum patterns that take on more of a modern Amorphis Folk touch, all the while sharing many of these traits with “The River.” The rich mixture of sadness and glory is simply stunning, though the near eight minute length finds passages that seem foreign to the performance, like the acoustic and piano piece starting at four-and-a-half minutes in.

That aforementioned Folk Metal touch can be felt on many other tracks on the release, though not all really stick too close with it. “Revelation” is a faster track that blends the emotion into the speed quite eloquently, not to mention solid keyboard performances that compliment the lead riffs. The notes about three minutes in have a very light distortion that incorporates a hint of a whimsical Progressive Rock in the acoustic riffs of the bridge a minute later. The main verses, however, cater towards a traditional Gothenburg style. “Black Heart Rebellion” kicks off with blistering drums and equal riffs that sound more like a modern blast beat fuelled Black Metal performance that only crops up again later in the drums to support the Amon Amarth style hooks that appear.

“Collapsing Words” is another faster track that sticks with the style of “Black Heart Rebellion.” The lead riffs in the main verses show a little more complexity in their speed, leading to a much tighter performance in all the spots outside the chorus and some bridges. Those sections revert back to the emotional performances with slower paces once more, especially towards the end when the mourning atmosphere is pushed hard, becoming far more depressing with the slightly masked guttural vocals. Of course the song “Ephemeral” is included, though it’s the “album version” and not the one already available on the EP of the same title. It’s a fantastic song, incredibly catchy, and takes full advantage of the quicker speed to create a lively, upbeat environment throughout. It’s the vocals that shine the most though, as there are plenty of opportunities for them to go a bit nuts. Instead it’s a minimal performance that sometimes has a little more enthusiasm in the chorus and conclusion.

Anyone who is familiar with the recent work from Insomnium will know what to expect right away. Shadows of the Dying Sun is a pretty album of dark and beautiful melodic moodiness that manages to throw a few non-emotional gems your way as well. Pretty much every song on here works from start to finish, and the most out of place cuts like “Ephemeral” and “Revelation” still suit the flow. Even at its most basic, this album manages to pull out dynamic feelings with their instruments that easily grab the listener and refuse to let him or her go until it’s all over. Shadows of the Dying Sun finds Insomnium continuing the group’s long line of living, breathing musical performances, though not raising the bar that much higher than their previous few releases.
