L’Hiver en Deuil, which means “Winter in Mourning” when translated from French, is a cold Black Metal group that takes on the Depressive style without going overboard like some in the genre lately. Forged out of Galmaarden, Belgium, the five piece came together in 2010, finally releasing their first full-length (which is being pushed as a debut EP) called Ter Aarde. While a self-release, it is being handled and promoted by Consouling Agency, a sub-division of the label Consouling Sounds. With two instrumentals and five full-length cuts, does Ter Aarde stand out in the flood of blackened sadness and regret, or is it nothing but bland and generic performances?

“Prelude” starts the album off rather generically, having some slower guitar riffs played over the sounds of rain and a few cracks of thunder. After over a minute-and-a-half the rain effects continue onto “Ocean Black,” though the crushing blunt distortion of the guitars is given up for a cleaner approach with lighter drumming for the next forty-two seconds. Much like the offering prior, this one isn’t too unique. The largely slower Doom Metal pace does make the impact of the performance and slightly depressing atmosphere stand out more, though the mid-tempo passage that hits is pretty catchy. “As” puts some additional echo on the vocals, and some extra range is utilized to make them more menacing. The buzzing lends to more of a blunt edge, working with the slower verses and the grander chorus. The thud of the bass kicks, however, doesn’t quite work out, especially against the tighter snares and louder cymbals throughout.

While much of the album doesn’t come off too unique, there are a few songs that immediately stand out from the Depressive templates. “Fatum” puts the focus more towards the snares, at times taking on a march-like pattern with a sharper buzzing to the guitars. While it doesn’t have that icy touch the others hold, it does have more of a furious Black Metal vibe courtesy some tighter chords and later blast beat drumming that help make the bass kicks sound stronger. Then there’s “Gekluisterd” that manages to blend the common Depressive Black Metal touches with the anger of “Fatum.” The nearly nine-and-a-half minute performance uses cleaner leads against additional blunt distortions in the background, moved at that Doom Metal pace “Ocean Black” carries with pride. There are times things pick up into a bit of chaos, capturing the rage and frustration perfectly, especially at the end when it offers closure before bringing the rain back briefly to segway into the the simple guitar performance and revesed drums that make up the “Outro.”

Ter Aarde is a nice entry into the Black Metal genre as a whole, and a rather stable entry into the Depressive style. No, you won’t find anything that new, but what is here is executed well enough to convey some emotions at times, such as frustration, anger, and sorrow. The main allure to this release is how most of the songs seem to flow from one another, as if having a subtle concept that links them together, all the while being very different pieces from one another. It’s a well crafted recording that has an idea of what it wants to be, but plays it safe to make sure it gets the point across that it’s intended to be frostbitten and emotional. Hopefully L’Hiver en Deuil will shake that fear away, as the more ferocious offerings here really stand out the most, showing a band with the chops needed to stand out in this quickly flooding sub-genre.
