California’s Morfin is a fairly new band, though their music would have you think otherwise. The four-piece group came together in 2010, and issued their first demo, Crystal Darkness, about a year later. It made the typical rounds in the Death Metal underground, though never really clawed out of obscurity. Fast forward a few years, and the group has been picked up by the powerhouse known as F.D.A. Rekotz to issue their debut full-length album Inoculation for an early 2014 release. But, given their distinctly familiar sound, is this a group that is poised to make a name for themselves other than that of Chuck Schuldiner?

Inoculation carries a typical modern roughness to it. There’s an analog sound that also finds the audio at a lower volume level that requires you to turn it up louder than most raw releases these days. It also helps to assert the obvious Death influence in pretty much all the songs this album has to offer. “Evil Within” immediately confirms this with similar bass heavy technical chords and the signature vocal structure of Human-era material, right down to carrying a similar chorus to the song “Suicide Machine,” but acting here as an extensive build up to a solid guitar solo. This is something much of the album has going for it, especially on “Cryostasis,” which touts two short-but-sweet solos back-to-back. The song itself mixes together grim, oppressive atmospheres with some groove heavy riffs that find some additional technicality at key times, such as the bridges that aren’t your standard blast beat fodder. “Inoculation,” however, finds some additional complexity in the main verses, though not so much anywhere else.

“Dark Creator” is a little more upbeat compared to the others. There are some random aggressive sections that can have a short blasting spasm, but the general focus is in groove-heavy riffs and two-step drumming that scream Swedish Death Metal influence, but with a raw early Toxic Holocaust audio and atmosphere to it that makes it all a little grittier. There’s also the little instrumental piece “Primordial” that establishes a surprisingly desolate atmosphere given the minimal band presence behind it. It isn’t linked to any song though, offering a brief little breather you don’t really need but won’t mind taking. And then there’s the cover of Death‘s “Leprosy,” which is as you would expect from a band that basically emulates the inspiration that wrote the original version of this song, though there is some noticeable static that actually gets annoying and more abundant the further you get (and no it’s not my speakers as I heard it on three different sets of speakers).

What more could possibly be said about Inoculation other than it’s Death incarnate. Aside some other arguable eighties to early nineties Death Metal influences like Autopsy, maybe some Vader, even a hint of Thrash a la Slayer if you really want to stretch for comparisons, this is far from an original work. Morfin wear their Death worship on their sleeves and have no shame in touting how well they can mimick their material to the point of plagiarism. To be fair, it really does seem like Mofin are channelling the spirit of Chuck Schuldiner while paying homage to him by becoming a clone of his life’s work to give us the album he himself can’t physically give us until the day Jurassic Park becomes an inexpensive reality to coincide with a late night trip to the cemetary. If you yearn for that new Death release you’ll never get, then Inoculation is worth giving a spin. That is if you can last that long without realizin you’re better off listening to every Death album you own instead/
