The music to this release is what the band Occult (from Holland) wishes their releases were. The music on this release does vary. While “The Creature” and “Flame Of Malignance” will kick you square in the throat with their tenacity and speed, “Black Soul” and “Iconoclast are a little more laid back with the only faster moment really being the main verse. There really is no real technicality (when comparing to their previous release) outside of some of the drumming to the music either, just solid thrash riffs with a perfectly matching black metal wail vocal style.
There really aren’t any downfalls to this release at all, aside the remade track “Iconoclast” and even “Void Of Naxir”. “Iconoclast” originally appeared on the band’s demo, and was re-recorded for this release. The only reason this one is mentioned as an exception is because the song gets a little repetative after the first listen and will wind up boring you in the future. “Void Of Naxir”, however, is a very interesting, slower paced song, but, like “Iconoclast”, after a few listens you will be bored with it. Another aspect worth mentioning is that, throughout the album, at the most random moments in songs, you get a sort of deep voiced naration. It’s not really that bad, but it doesn’t truly serve a purpose other then changing things up a bit. But, that’s about it, the rest of the album, especially “Experiment In Terror” and “At The Roots” are just killer blackened thrash.
Mater Of All Evil is definitely one hell of a reunion album. While it isn’t picture perfect, with a few songs that will get boring over time and the whole narration thing, it is still a must have album for anyone into metal. The combination of black metal and thrash metal with death metal on this release is perfect, and it has great variety in the music from the insane openner “The Creature” to the much slower, often ballad-esque “Fathers”.
