When it comes to Finland, one thing is almost always certain: Their musicians know how to add emotion in a subtle manner. Nicumo is a five-piece band that also knows how to do this, and does so with their debut full-length album, The End of Silence. After two self-released EPs, the group find themselves signed with Inverse Records, and ready to unleash this over fifty minute recording. But, will it be lost in the mix, or does Nicumo have what it takes to make an impact?

The End of Silence finds a superb audio quality at work, which is absolutely necessary given some of the emotional tones associated with the style. The guitars vary between clean to having a slight distortion that is pretty common to the Hard Rock world. The bass is tuned down pretty low so that it twangs quite often and gives the material a little more edge. The drums carry a nice hint of authority to them as well, especially with the rich click of the bass kicks. The cymbals aren’t quite as crisp as you would hope, sometimes coming through a bit jumbled together, but the snares carry a strong snap that does manage to make up for it a bit. Then there’s the vocals, which show a good deal of range, but mostly a rougher harmonization that is quite louder compared to the clean singing.

There’s no denying that some of Finland’s biggest exports are on display here. “Follow Me” kicks the album off with a slower pace that isn’t too heavy, but still really catchy. The chorus picks up some additional enthusiasm, which is fed into by the clean leads that make a moving and beautiful atmosphere similar to something off a H.I.M. album. This does cause the track to be a bit more memorable overall than had they not gone this route, and it also helps out “My Own Silence.” This one really gets the emotional aspect right, even crossing into Doom Metal to portray a dark beauty that is as poetic as it is driven by the bass.

And then there’s the Hard Rock oriented cuts that show an appreciation for bands like Sentenced. “Firestorm” ends up a surprisingly complex track despite it’s somber, laid back atmosphere. The main verses are wide open, but don’t rely on gimmickly simple held notes to keep the listener attentive to the fragile clean singing. The chorus acts more like an epic Modern Rock climax that pays off thanks to how well the band segways into it. The only issue is that the band does start milking this template. “Lines Drawn by Tears” is quite similar aside are the empty verses focusing on the bass, as well as the atmosphere being more upbeat. It is another enjoyable song, though the faster passages do seem surprisingly thinner, perhaps due to what role the bass guitar seems to play. “Difference” tries to capture the emotional magic of “Follow Me,” but make it richer for this template, coming off like that expands into “Kills Me.” Sadly, this one hurts, as the chorus sounds fantastic, capturing a rare glimpse of frustration instead of beauty or love.

This album is actually really hard to sum up. While it’s clear Nicumo isn’t all that unique a group, they still take the direction of their obvious influences into a different direction. When they play with emotion, they can present a truly beautiful piece, or they can just simplify everything into a catchy top twenty track that’s too abrasive for mainstream radio but still accessable for everyone. Unfortunately, even when the songs stand out that way, there’s very little that make them that special. In the end, The End of Silence is a solid effort that isn’t exactly a copy and paste hero worship album. But, after a few spins, chances are you’ll retire this one when the new Metal veneer wears off, returning to your favorite H.I.M. or Sentenced releases.
