After two successful EPs, The Browning was picked up by Earache Records to issue their debut full-length album, Burn This World. This, too, was met with much praise for the groups mixture of Electronica and Deathcore. Two years have passed since then, and the band returns with their much anticipated follow-up recording, Hypernova, bringing together thirteen new compositions and a remix track, all clocking in at forty-seven minutes. But, with vocalist and programmer Johnny McBee being the only founding member along side Collin Woroniak on guitar, Drew Ellis on bass, and Cody Stewart on drums, will this be a tighter offering with some real maturity, or is it all a step backwards due to the line-up changes that occurred last year?

Hypernova holds up well despite the slew of new members. “Invasion” sets the sleek Science Fiction tone to the music, incorporating some later shouting later on before fading out to let “Save the World” commence. The short introduction throws some buzzing mid-pitch electronics you way with some notes more technical than the leads. The guitar work is rather simple, especially with the one note breakdowns that occur, but these tones do help to make up for this at the end of the song, as well as others, such as “Gravedigger” which finds a stronger emphasis on the deeper bass than anything. The closing breakdown isn’t anything special, but the electronics shine through in the gaps, presenting a catchy beat to the conflicting simplistic climax. While they shine here, “Type 1a” has a good chunk towards the end that cuts away from the Deathcore, and leaves an infectious, rather laid back Electronica performance that is hard not to move your head along to if it wasn’t before hand.

“Industry” is easily one of the best. While littered with one chord breakdowns, there are plenty of passages that are just full of energy and just keep laying into the listener. The performance itself is also the tightest, and features some of the richest, faster drumming available, but at a cost. Due to the more dominant drumming, the washout on the cymbals becomes a lot more obvious and hard to overlook. “Fifth Kind” is another that sticks out quite well despite the same kind of breakdowns, and even slowing them down. The haunting electronics and melodic chorus with clean singing actually sound really good together, and the drums have patches of being really catchy.

While a good chunk of Hypernova is solid, it’s the last few songs that simply are not that good. This drop starts at “Breaking Point,” which carries a hint of modern hi-tech sounding In Flames, showing some melody thanks to the electronics, especially during the rich chorus. Sadly, The Browning really slows the pace down, making even the main verses a bit too simple despite the slower speed, and the sections that are meant to be kind of epic don’t hit that level. The track also doesn’t really go anywhere, which the decreased speed and increasingly boring breakdowns fuel the flames of. “Cross the Line” is a little richer, has fewer breakdowns, but still suffers from some bland material, and a lack of catchy riffs and Electronica. The energy just seems to have been sapped around “Breaking Point,” but thankfully doesn’t spread. Finally there’s “Gravedigger (Eskimo Callboy Remix),” which is mostly the Electronica performance and vocals among chunks of uninspiring, even annoying Dub-Step.

Even though the closing isn’t that great, Hypernova ends up a superb example of what Deathcore bands can accomplish. The Browning don’t do anything too different from other bands that utilize simpler music and one-chord breakdowns, but they manage to make the additional Electronica elements less like a gimmick, and more like a vital part of the band’s sound, helping to fill the gaps in the performances and offer the technicality the band members don’t physically do half the time. When this combination is met with a decent amount of enthusiasm that really feeds off the sleek audio production, you’ll find yourself having a blast, itching to jump into any moshpit and unload, even if its one of your own creation.
