Right from the start you are assaulted with technical insanity. “An Autopsy” and “Pestilence” are simply amazing songs that any technical death fan will enjoy. The guitar riffs are amazing, the drumming phenomenal, and simply well done. These two set the pattern for how the music on this release will go, with the exception of the “Horizons Of Chaos” tracks, which seem to ditch the pattern of the predecessors. “Horizons Of Chaos Part 1” feels more like a typical death metal song, but slowed down without much technicality to it. However “Horizons Of Chaos 2” has a more subtle technical aspect, aside the guitars during the bridge that appears through the song, as well as the breakdown. By subtle, I mean it is there, but moreso in the background as melody then as lead.
One interesting aspect of the album is that there is no set drummer. The drumming on this release is done by four different drummers, all of them very talented and sounding rather similar to one another in the final mix. Aside thee drumming, some of the songs, like “Leica”, also have some keyboard work in the background, which just adds a hint of melody during certain moments of the songs, prodominantly in the chorus though. And of course, “Akeldama”, an instrumental which adds distorted vocals in the beginning and certain moments through the song, also shows off a bit of a jazz moment about three and a half minutes in. Sadly, this song, while well done, can get boring after the first few listens. “The Ghost Of A Stranger” also has a bit of a jazz moment about the same amount of time in. This one, however, will not get boring after the first few listens.
The Faceless are going to be a band to keep an eye on. Akeldama is a well done technical death assault that blends deathcore, and some of the more experimental hardcore sounds perfectly. With a few moments that seem out of place on a few songs, such as the aforementioned jazz moments, and momentarily slowing down in the song aside the breakdowns, this release is a very promising start from this band.
