The Warriors: See How You Are

Over the years, I had heard of a band called The Warriors, but never had the opportunity to experience their music. Since 2003, the group has put out four total recordings, making See How You Are their fifth recording. While listed as a Punk and Hardcore band, the group seems to take a lot from the Hardcore scene, leaving only trace elements of straight forward Punk in their recordings, and especially on this recording. See How You Are is a well composed album with varying levels of Hardcore, boasting a rather unique sound, but, in the long run, does this release really stand it’s ground as a unique experience, or is this just another album that’s only shiny the first time through?

See How You Are is an interesting album that takes the Hardcore sound, and seems to incorporate more modern Alternative Rock and Adult Contemporary ideas into it. One can’t help but listen to the track “Seize the Fire” and expect to hear someone start crooning out a very soft rock Billboard Top 200 song, despite the overall heaviness of the music. It’s moments like that which really set this release apart from many others. Many of the songs also seem to blend into others, like “Seize the Fire” with “Pit of Shame”, which is another interesting aspect of the release, and that song’s somewhat melodic chorus is definitely catchy. But, it’s with this song that the album starts to get rather repetitive.

While See How You Are has a very heavy recording quality with the guitars, and the screaming vocals perfectly match that heaviness and give it an additional Punk atmosphere with it’s higher pitched approach, the music is dull with only the crushing guitars and well paced drums going for it outside the screams. Practically every track on here goes at a slow pace, and while it brings a level of Punk attitude and Hardcore intensity, there’s no real variety outside of some randomly different guitar chords. “The War Unseen” sounds like “Pit of Shame”, and then you get “Mental Chains” which actually just sounds like some weird combination of Coalesce meets early Beastie Boys. Again, the song is not bad, and the slight difference in the guitars works in it’s favor to kill the repetition, despite the obvious similarities to other established bands, but other then that, it’s just slower paced material that doesn’t generally violate the same kind of performance pattern laid out right away on “See How You Are”, following the same pattern of placing bridges, verse and chorus in the same spot, the same kind of segways into breakdowns, the only exceptions may be an additional bridge here and there to mix things up. Other then that, most songs sound rather similar, and tack on that the music isn’t all that impressive in the first place, and it starts to get boring really quick.

Aside “Mental Chains”, there’s also “Here We Go Again”, which shows the inspiration by some of today and yesterday’s Alternative Rock groups. The song is composed of chugging guitars that just feel like they are right in your face and the screaming works nicely, but the chorus feels a little weak in comparison, giving off a slightly melodic sound that simply doesn’t work with the intimidating feeling of the chugging music before it. The breakdown on the track feels a little forced as well, but at least retains that intimidating feeling, though feeling poorly designed. Even with it’s faults, this becomes one of the better tracks on here, like “Mental Chains” and “See How You Are”. And, really, that’s all that stands out. “The Enforcer” winds up being a bit of a teaste, as the song starts off with a lot of energy and makes you think you’re going to get a high energy, full octane Hardcore ride, but instead it just slows down to the same slow paced material you’ve heard over and over on this album already. Chances are good this is where many listeners will just give up.

The Warriors put together an album that’s ok, but it’s far from anything great. With only a few shining moments, this album tries to take the slower paced in-your-face Hardcore musical approach and run with it. While it sounds great at first, by the time you get half way through, you’ll be tired of hearing the exact same thing over and over again. Half the time, if the song doesn’t actually bleed into the next track, you won’t know the band had started another song. For me, I hadn’t realized that what I thought was “The War Unseen” had actually become “Pit of Shame”, leaving me to go back and give those songs another listen because I honestly thought I zoned out, but nope, it’s easy to make that mistake. The album trudges along like this until the very end where you get the same slow paced attitude that doesn’t feel intimidating or like it has any actual attitude or energy whatsoever to close the album out, and due to how repetitive everything is, even “See How You Are” sounds like you’ve heard it a million times over. There’s nothing special about this release aside a few songs that stand out, and the more Alternative Rock influenced music approach to lend a unique sound that really gets old fast, and just really isn’t worth picking up at all, even for the dedicated Hardcore fans out there.
