When it comes to Metal from Turkey, for most outside that region of the world it ends up a difficult task to name more than a handful of groups from that area of the world. It’s not that the region lacks a community or that the bands from there are horrible, it’s just one of those territories that seems to produce so few groups over the years and is largely overlooked by your average Metalhead in favor of Sweden, Finland, Italy and many more thriving locations when it comes to discovering new bands. Turkey, however, is where we find this five-piece Thrash Metal act Vengeful Ghoul originating from. The initial line-up came together in 2004 with their first and only demo Premier Fury dropping two years later. Over the years, members came and went, and new material was put on hold until the 2013 sinle “Ruthless Crow” emerged. It may have only been one track, but it was enough to herald the coming of new music and the early 2014 release of their debut full-length album Timeless Warfare. Is it a long overdue effort of solid musicianship, or has the wait between it and their demo done more damage than good?

While there’s no denying the heavy Thrash Metal roots of Vengeful Ghoul on Timeless Warfare, there’s no escaping the obvious Judas Priest influence. This is felt throughout the album, but more dominant in songs like “Ruthless Crow,” a hard hitting track that sometimes flaunts itself as a Metal anthem, primarily in the chorus. There’s even a bit of Dio and Alice Cooper floating around like on “My Crowded Solitude.” This one introduces that twisted ballad approach of the latter performer quite well in the introduction before heading into some solid hooks backed with some Hard Rock simplicity to a mixture of pure Metal that fans of Beyond Fallen will greatly appreciate.

“Chained Freedom” has an extensive build to the start, playing up the war-theme with explosions and gun fire before moving into some riffs that show a little complexity reminiscent of Anthrax, but not afraid to get dark and moody by the three minute mark. “Under Control” just has some really infectious riffs throughout that work perfectly with the mid-tempo performance and booming steady bass kicks that just complete the effect of the restrained pace. This instrument is one of the points where Timeless Warfare truly shines, and if the kit didn’t have a similar impact overall, this song and many others simply wouldn’t be the same.

“Under Control” focuses more on the Power Metal side of the band’s sound, though the guitar solo does carry a nice early Heavy Metal touch to it before shifting back into some Thrash Metal technicality for a bit. The overall track is comparable to Iced Earth‘s melancholic performances that sound a bit out of place, but ends up one of the stronger tracks of the album that introduces some surprisingly moving riffs. “Schaukelstuhl,” however, takes on a Hard Rock tinged ballad performance with echoing cleaner notes that seem to ripple against the darkness of the main verses. The chorus finds some additional symphonic effects in the background that builds up a sombre setting to compliment the matching singing that more than likely hits harder if you understand the language and can put the tone of voice in perspective what what the words are emphasizing.

Other than some subtle regional cultural elements to the music once in a while, there’s nothing fresh really brought into Timeless Warfare, and that’s fine considering how good it all sounds. Vengeful Ghoul do make their influences known, and it’s impossible not to pick them out of the nine song line-up. Thankfully it’s not all handled in as rehashed carbon copy worship. The slightly empty and darker landscapes help the largely crisp audio quality push the war-torn themes forward, even making some of the more emotional performances and passages have a little more intimacy or meaning behind them. If you enjoy a good slab of Heavy Metal or Thrash Metal, Timeless Warfare from Vengeful Ghoul makes for a surprising undiscovered act out of Istanbul.
