Anyone with their ear to the Death Metal underground, or at least those who enjoy the fine releases of F.D.A. Rekotz, have surely heard of Obscure Infinity and Wound at this point. The first is a German group that formed in 2007 and named themselves after a song by the band Grave, the latter from the same region but having come together in 2011 with only one full-length compared to the other’s two. For 2014, the label has brought these two together for a highly limited seven-inch vinyl split of only five hundred pressed titled Souls of Eternal Damnation. But does it act as a great introduction to these bands, or are these just some generic fodder aimed at keeping fans happy until the next release?

While both play Death Metal, Wound has a blackened touch to their contribution, “Kingdom”. After some brief effects the deep, bass heavy performance bounces off non-existent walls thanks to the rougher audio, building up from simple effects to a faster paced assault of high distortion and echoing brutality just past the minute and a half mark that sends a creepy chill down your spine with the vile sounding riffs that lead to more of a colder Doom Metal closer that limps across the finish line on broken knees with additional choir singing behind it all. That eeriness is continued on Obscure Infinity‘s “Perdition Destiny”. The distortion is a little more crisp and blunt in comparison, but when the pace picks up there’s an uncompromising attitude behind the catchy chords and stern grooves the band seems to weave in and out of. The solo about three minutes in, however, acts as the only ray of light in this dark world, blurring the lines between hope and helplessness as the song gives out on some grand riffs and desperate screams in the background.

Souls of Eternal Damnation may only be one song per band, but fans of Death Metal will find enough creepy, cold, even vile sounding music here to satiate their appetite for brutality a little while longer. Neither track feels like b-side fodder left off a previous recording of some kind. But, then again, neither band has ever really churned out half-assed music in the past. Wound and Obscure Infinity are two ly different acts that do seem to share many core principles, something that allows this split to keep you wrapped up in this world more than had it been two random bands that sound nothing alike, or aren’t even in the same genre. If you enjoy the style, Souls of Eternal Damnation is a split that is well worth the money.
